    jarcher I can't handle a title

I was just looking at th threads when I came to the svchost thread in spyware specific
I noticed before I ever saw the thread that I have six of then
    is that normal?
    what exactly is it?
I downloaded the process explorer to take a look
and they all pretty much say the same thing

and if the type 'mutant' bad?
    down at the bottom?

and how woul I know if there is something bad there

Right click on each of them, go to properties and see what the services say.

what the hell is a link tracking client? a dns client

some have one or two services
some I know or understand why there there

and why do I need a a wireless config?

and every time that LUXUM pops up
for my live update for Norton I get an ass load of mutant handle thingys

    \BaseNamedObjects\. . . . . . . . . . .
    held: false
    abandond: false?

the thing is I uninstalled Norton six months ago. . . . .

LiveUpdate is a program of its own--better check Add/Remove. Its still there, somewhere.

    link tracking client?

Eh...is that under svchost.exe? Sounds fishy to me.

As for wireless config, you don't if you don't have wireless.

use www.blackviper.com for a good service tweaking guide.

it does sound fishy, don't it

    I run adaware,SpyBot S&D every day
CWShredder ,Hjt once a week(at least)
am using easy cleaner everytime I get off the net
    kill2me I ran once
    regscrubxp I ran
so I figured it wasn't bad

I can't find an uninstall for norton firewall(as of yet)
I cannot remove it through add/remove programs
    but that is probably it

but how do I really know what I don't need?

Blackviper has it pinned down pretty well.

Truth be told, the description for the services in services.msc (start, run) can give you a decent idea if you need something.

I cannot find an uninstall for any norton/symantec
    can they just be deleted?

    when I ran services.msc
    I found
    snmp service
    snmp trap service
    system event notification

anything that traks is bad, right?

    It could be legit.

    Are you running IIS?

    If so, why?

    so then no?

do I just go thru everything I have one by one and see what they are
    (google or something)
the discriptions sometimes are not descriptive enough for me, sorry

    thanks for the help, Adrynalyne
    appriciate it

    and that is what?

In regards to LiveUpdate, when I had that problem, I went to the registry and removed the run key. I then removed the symantec shared folder under C:\program files\common files\.

At your own risk, of course.

    IIS is Internet Information Services.

Check add/remove Windows Components for it.

    the thing is
I had a virus the tor the shit out of my norton
and I do not have a disc(it was all set up on my pc)
so I just tried to get rid of it

    again that means what?

I am not fitted to be titled a major geek
    a Major Dumass maybe

    but that I can do
its just a mater of finding the reg
    that shouldn't be a problem
just gotta know what your looking for
    at my own risk

    again, many thanks

    IIS isn't even an option

As Adrynalyn said, make sure you check out Black Vipers page, it will lead you through countless "services" that can be disabled, some of which fall under "svchost". Not all are bad, but you can sure ease the load on your computer if you go through his list.

Scroll and stroll down this page for a a whole lot of info.
