    Hi
I'm running XP SP3. I just plugged a pair of speakers into my headphone jack on my desktop, and they won't play stereo- they do play stereo on my laptop.

In control panel > sounds > speaker settings > advanced > speaker setup I have desktop stereo speakers selected.

In control panel > sounds > device volume > advanced, my levels are balanced and nothing is muted.

I do have some Realtek AC97 audio thing listed in a few places, not sure if that's related.

Let me know if you need any more info, thanks! :)

Do you have your speakers pluged into the front or the back if its the Front then i would say check too see if the Cable is pluged in the right slots on your mob

What kinda MOB do you have

The speakers are plugged into the back, into the only outgoing jack there is.

I don't know what motherboard I have, a quick Google said to run DXDIAG to find out; the computer is an HP Pavilion 06 with an Intel Pentium 4 chip, and it's running Phoenix Award Workstation BIOS v6PG... does that help?

When I go to start > run > dxdiag > sound > test directsound, it only plays mono.

When I go to dxdiag > music > "test using this port" and deselect Microsoft Synthesizer and select Realtek AC97, the test sound plays in stereo. On the same page, Realtek is not listed as my default port (Microsoft Synthesizer is listed as default), could that be it? On control panel > sounds, the Realtek is listed as the default playback device, so I'm not sure what's going on there.
