Switching form Pentium to AMD

If I were to switch form a Pentium IV 2.8ghz HT to a AMD 64 what would I exactly need and what should I look out for as compatiablity wise. I"m actually thinking about the switching but not anytime soon. Also what is a good AMD-64. I see the FX and I see other AMD 64. Which is excatly good?

 

You'll want either an AMD 64 FX, or a Socket 939 processor. (so you can have dual channel RAM) You'll also need a new motherboard, and possibly RAM.

You'll need to replace basically the core of the system, (CPU, RAM, motherboard, heatsink..), and AFAIK the FX is the better chip. A good chipset to look for it an nForce3.

I agree. If I had to buy a system right now, I'd go with an AMD XP processor or a nice P4 like the one TheFrostyOne already has. Gimme PC3200 support, dual channel, on-board SATA, and I'm happy with a nice little interim system.
