uninstall your current nvidia drivers from add/remove programs. also download the detonator destroyer tool from here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download806.html

boot to safe mode (not necessary, but nice) and run that tool to get rid of any traces of nVidia drivers.

then power down (make sure you unplug the power cord from the power supply), put the new card in, and boot up like normally, installing the latest drivers from www.ati.com

the catalyst 4.7 are the latest, but if you are going to play doom 3, you may want the 4.9 beta's as they have a fix for it.

maybe i'm just adding to the rumors of 'painful' switches between the two. i thought there could be some conflicts, but maybe those are long since outdated or just false. good to know though.

in any case, it still cant hurt to be sure the remnants are gone.

I recently did the same, without problems. I uninstalled my Nvidia card, shut down, installed the ATI card and cleaned up the extra files left over with Nasty File Remover http://majorgeeks.com/download3233.html

Of course, computer hardware, and expertise, varies explaining why you hear horror stories. Make sure your motherboard drivers are current, especially if your installing a newer card like the 9800, or you will have problems that you might assume are related to the card swap.
