I just got a PC from a friend that is running Windows 2000, but did not get the CD's that go with it. I want to install Windows ME, which I do have the cd's for, and which will give me a clean system to start from. Unfortunately, it will not let me install Me because 2000 is running. I understand that I can partition the harddrive and then install ME there, remove the the partition and  the old 2000... But the computer won't let me partition the harddrive because it shows no "unallocuted space." How do I change that and proceed from there?

Find out what make is the Drive, then by visiting the Drive's manufacturer's web site you could download its utilities for free which would allow you to create a bootable CD and do all the necessary partitioning and formating steps. Alternative would be to visit this site's Drive Utility download page to use a 3rd party, preferably free utility but I couldn't give you any specific ones.

I though the Windows ME boot (startup) disk would show the Windows 2000 partition as a 'non-FAT (DOS) extended' partition or someting like that which you could still select and delete. I can't remember for sure but my question is do you really want to get rid of Windows2000 for ME? I mean ME for crying out loud, arguably the worst Windows version ever... :p

    ~TL

PS. I was going to attach a zipped program called GDisk which I use to wipe out all types of partitions on a HD but file was a bit bigger than allowed, sorry...

I agree with Turcoloco on the ME vs. 2000.
2000 is up and running? You don't even want to think
of going backwards like that. Not unless 2000 is
hopelessly corrupted. And even then, it would probably
run better than ME.

I agree with the above anti-ME sentiment, but you are free to do as you choose.
My question is: is your Win2K box using the FAT32 or NTFS filesystem? If it is NTFS, there may be some complications reverting to the filesystem that supports ME.

However, I haven't tried any of the formatting/partitioning apps available on this site (YET), so somebody please correct me if I'm wrong!
