I've got Norton System Works installed on my system. I have it configured for all functions to remain off unless I turn on any of its features for system maintenance.

But no matter how hard I try I can't stop the Symantec NetDetect from popping up in my Schedule Task list. I've tried configuring System Works as well as the task itself but to no avail.

Anyone know how to disable this task for good (unless I otherwise turn it on manually)?

[font=Verdana, Arial]Symantec NetDetect. NDETECT is part of Norton’s LiveUpdate. It checks whether you have an Internet connection and whether it can communicate with the Symantec website. If it can, it then switches over to LiveUpdate which itself checks for updates to your Norton AntiVirus, PCAnywhere, Internet Security, or Personal Firewall software.
    Recommendation :
If you see NDETECT in your Task List, it is only because you brought up the Task List at the exact moment that NDETECT was checking for an Internet connection. NDETECT only stays in the Task List very briefly. Also, NDETECT will only run if you have configured LiveUpdate to update your PC automatically, as it is run through Scheduled Tasks.

    I have done the following:

    1) Went into the Live Update options and unchecked everything

    2) Deleted the task in the task manager

    3) Ran msconfig and disabled all start up programs

I reboot and guess what? The NetDetect pops back up in my scheduled tasks.

Also, I have found something strange. I keep all Norton System Works functions off (I unchecked anything in the options that talks about auto-run or starting programs on system start up).

Yet, when I pull up the Task Manager I find the following programs always running in the background:

    NPROTECT.exe
    GHOSTS~2.exe

How the hell do I turn this damn program off until I say it should run?

I'd also, disable any services that symantec installs also. (2k, xp)

Start, run and type in services.msc then click OK.

Double-click the service in question, and use the drop-down box to change the status to Automatic - meaning it's always on, Manual - it's only on when the parent program requests it, or disabled for obviously always off.

Underneath you can also start, stop, pause and resume the service.

**Be aware that some programs won't work with the manual setting, Norton and Diskeeper being two examples**
