Am trying to totally remove Symantec/Norton so I can install AVG instead. I've uninstalled and deleted all that I could. In c:program Files\Common Files, I could not delete symlcnet.dll. It said 'access denied.'

Then I ran a search on Hidden Files and found about 40 more references.

What is my next step as I know the computer will not be happy if I try to install a 2nd anti-virus. Thanks

After you do the Uninstall of Norton, you should run the Norton Removal Tool. It will get rid of all the left over bits that remain after uninstalling.

Just click on the link I gave you and download it. It's been a long time since I removed Norton, but just follow the instructions.

Thanks--I did it. Double checked and it looks like it's all gone--so safe to install AVG! Would you mind recommending anti-spam program?

    :) You're welcome.

Here is the link for the top freeware picks download page:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20 It's a good guide because it lets you know how many of each type of protection you should use.

Another good one is Chaslang's How to protect your computer. He is one of the anti malware experts here and lists the ones he recommends:

I use AntiVir for my realtime antivirus. Comodo for my firewall and Spysweeper (which is a paid version) for real time antimalware. I use spyware blaster and spybot (to do periodic scans).

They've all worked great for me.

ComodoBO is a very good antimalware app.

    :) anymore questions...ask away.

First, you should always start your own thread asking for help.

Have you tried the Norton Removal Tool as suggested above for the OP?
