Symptoms of Hard Drive Problems

I have an IMB laptop loaded with Windows 2000 pro. Lately it has been randomly "scratching" and "ticking". When this happens, my processing time decreases dramatically. Restarting does not seem to help, nor does letting the laptop rest for awhile before the reboot. The only other behavior variable I can think of is that my screen starts out purple then displays the proper colors. This symptom started before the current difficulties, so it is probably not related.

Can anyone help me define my problem so that I know exactly what needs repair/replacing?

Generally when you get scratching and ticking noises and they are like metallic in sound? its a early warning your hard drive is about to fail at some point, if you have important files etc backup now to CD as if the drive fails you will not easily recover them, without paying alot of money and even then your not guaranteed to recover all.

I suspected that my problem was related to the hard drive. Thanks for the confirmation. I have already backed up my essential files off-site so I'm all set for a replacement.
