I have a Dell Dimension E510 desktop w/ windows XP pro sp 3. Saturday night I wanted to "instantly watch" a childrens movie on Netflix. It required me to download their instant movie player in addition to an active x control. Then it said I needed to update my windows media player, I didn't want to, but the kids just had to see this movie. The next day I tried to connect my mp3 player and it couldn't be detected (creative zen) so at this point I chose to do a system restore to a few days before the Netflix debacle. Thought that went fine until today when my husband calls me and says there is something wrong with Avast and he can't access his work website. So I came home and undid the restore which did nothing then selected a new restore point, which did nothing.

There is a red circle with a red slash across it, on top of the Avast icon in the start up tray. Avast is coming up with this error: "the AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error".

I went to Avast FAQ and performed all the steps listed to fix it, to no avail. Restored to a different day...nothing. Avast still has red circle w/slash on it. Here are the instructions....

Q: There“s a red circle on avast! a-ball icon in system tray and when I click on it, the error message appears saying "the AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error". How to fix this?

A: First, use Windows Update to be sure that all Windows components (including "RPC") is up to date. Then restart your computer and check if the problem persists. If it persists, follow these instructions:

Right-click the icon MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE.
In left column unroll SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS.
    Click on SERVICES.
In the right column, look at the state of service avast! Antivirus.
If the service isn't set to start automatically, set it that way (right-click it and select PROPERTIES and the STARTUP TYPE set to AUTOMATIC). Restart the computer after making the change.
If it was already set to "Automatic", check the status of the service. If it not "Started", try to start it (right-click it and select START).
If the service cannot be started, your avast! installation might be corrupted. Try repairing the avast! installation: click START -> CONTROL PANEL -> ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS -> avast! Antivirus -> CHANGE/REMOVE and select REPAIR.
This solution works on Windows NT, 2000, XP and 2003 only.

I have tried to Add/remove the Avast program ( to re-install it) but it will not allow me, it just sits there. The last time I tried, it made an error sound and still did nothing....no error messages except the RPC message. In the instructions it says "use Windows Update to be sure that all Windows components (including "RPC") is up to date." How do I find out if this RPC componet is up to date?

    I ran a MB scan and this is result...Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.28
