System Configuration Utility pop-up

I've used msconfig to uncheck things from the start-up menu and when I do this, it takes XP out of Normal Startup Mode and causes a pop-up to appear requesting a change back to Normal Startup Mode. Is there a way to take things out of the Startup menu without causing this "crisis" for the computer's Normal Startup Mode? I'd like to get things out like java, real player, etc.
    Thanks so much!

TBH if there are items in msconfig > startup that you dont want to start with your PC then I always delete using a registry cleaner or CCleaner > Tools > Startup option to delete perminently those unwanted entries.

Even MS Defender allows you to Disable or Remove startups with no msconfig involvement... In Tools > Software Explorer

Maybe just me but if its not for troubleshooting then I dont disable an item as I have already deemed it not needed if I was disabling it on a permanent basis in the first place :)

Halo is right. Edits made by MSConfig are really for diagnostic purposes, if you have no intention of ever restoring then then you may as well remove them permanently using one of the programs Halo recommended and then setting MSConfig back to normal mode.

Their are two schools of thought on MSCONFIG, dont think either are wrong, but iirc if you use msconfig to disable items, msconfig will run at each boot ( do correct me if I'm wrong as I havnt looked into this much apart from a quick test and MS System Configuration Utility aka msconfig.exe is added to the run hive ) and that would be something you'd be trying to stop in disabling the other startups in the first place?

If you wanted to restore any deleted items at some pont then thats where the registry cleaners I mentioned earlier would help as most backup what you delete and the simplest to use ( I still use this one ) is Regcleaner freee and all you do is install run and click Startup List and tick the item and delete/remove its backed up in case you wish to restore.

Now we're off to a good discussion ....
I have one machine that I've stopped a few programs running at start up with msconfig (like that damn messenger ...since it's almost impossible to kill that thing - not uninstall, just beat it into submission) and have had it this way for a few years ..doesn't seem to effect anything.

I'll try this. It sounds simple enough. I want to get java runtime and the various players out of the start menu, Real Player and Quick Time. Do those sound like anything vital for startup?

Also, I have to start a new thread, because I need help in a different area as I try and get my parent's new computer in a position to take over the functions of their old Win 98. When I tried out my data stick, thinking that was going to be an easy move, I couldn't get the old Win98 to recognize the new hardware, so I think I'm going to have to cable them together after all. The thought is a nightmare. I'll read about it and see if I can figure it out, but any tips would be welcome.

    Thanks Tim, Halo and Matt!

    Hi Halo,
    bedtime for bonzo! lol

Is MS Defender the same as Windows Defender?

Also, is Regcleaner's way of backing up the deleted start-up items by making a restore point? Or can I actually go into it despite erasing restore points and still get something back? Also, if I'm deleting things from the start-up menu, I'm not deleting them, am I? Or am I losing some option to keep them in the startup menu? I guess it doesn't matter if I can download them from the internet, but curious as always.

    What is TBH?

Just some added technical information. When one unchecks items within msconfig, this is stored in the following registry keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft\Shared Tools \ MSConfig \ startupreg
    and
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft\Shared Tools \ MSConfig \ startupfolder

Removing the keys here, will remove the items that are unchecked within msconfig.

Yes you can safely remove the Java Sheduler, Quicktime and Realtime from the startup location. Another common one that can safely be removed is adobe updater.

MS Windows Defender is the correct product name (I think) but yes MS Defender is the same as WIndows Defender.

TBH is an Acronymn for 'To Be Honest'

Please 'be' wary if you are planning to manually edit the registry and back up the bits you delete just to be on the safe side.

Yes MS Defender is same as Windows Defender ( I just too lazy to type Windows ) :)

Yes Regcleaner creates its own backup files and has nothing to do with System Restore points. Yes if you are deleting them from the registry they are gone. ( only to be restored using regcleaners backup of them ) But if you dont want them at all to start why keep them around to restore as you say most of those applications are easily downloaded again and update on a regular basis and updating will add the startups back again.

The other option is if you already have Windows Defender installed is to use Defender and Tools > System Explorer and block them from there, blocking will stop them from starting but you can easily enable them again.

TBH = To Be Honest ;)

@ TimW ~ I take it this is MSN Messenger or the Original Windows Messenger? if either I generally can set mine to not start at boot ok, just a pain as its startup is located not only in the registry but in the application itself ( Tools > Options > Prefs ) and also in Outlook Express in Tools > Options > General

also if you have XP Pro, there is an option in gpedit to also do this in Admin templates > windows components iirc ( sadly dont have admin rights on this work pc to double check )

Halo: In gpedit.msc Drill down Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Windows Components --> Windows Messenger.

    There are 2 policies:

Do not all Windows Messenger to be run
Do not automatically start Windows Messsenger initially

I tried this and it gives a lot of info about each program, but I couldn't tell if I was getting it out of the start menu.

I want them around!! I just don't want them in the start menu. I hope by using Regcleaner, I will still have java (for instance) when I open a browser and need it.

All you are doing is removing mainly the auto update checking application for these apps from starting at each boot and chaecking for updates and not the application itself... if not an Antivirus or Anti Malware application their is no major need for any application to run each boot anc check for updates, these can manually be done via the application, in Java's case via its Contol Panel icon.

as for Windows Defender, yes it gives loads of info and if you block an item iy is removed from the registrys run hive... easy way to check is using Regcleaner after you block an item and if its not in the Startups then its gone but still recovereable via Defender and enable.

    Hi Halo :)
Regcleaner is a new piece of software? It has some strange quirks. I tried it and everything I wanted out of my Task Manager seems to be gone. What is GoogleDesktopDisplay.exe? The computer I'm in seems to have a lot of stuff I don't recognize. Also, I can see evidence of Mcaffee all over the place, but I can't tell if it is actually updating or active. It does not appear in add/remove programs except for the portion which is like CCleaner. I've been told it comes in as an automatic part of AOL 9.0. If that is the case, is it a free version? Know anything about that? Sorry for so many questions all at once. Trying to learn this computer. Thanks!

Regcleaner is old software, but I still like its abilities and use it to this day, but do use CCleaner and its issues scan, which is also registry cleaner.

Googledesktopdisplay is Google Desktop Search.. did you install this at some point?

Alot of references will be to old software that leaves junk lying around in the registry.

Did you have Mcafee installed? if so again if removed its old reminents in the registry, but if part of AOL and if that is your ISP then leave alone. Mcafee free with AOL ... not got a clue is honest answer *sorry* will ahve to check with AOL.

didn't install googledesktopdisplay and I don't know what google desktop search is. I use google as my homepage, however, this computer came laden with a ton of software, and I'm looking for anything I can weed out.
I left mcafee installed. I just have an old dislike of it, but mainly now, I'm trying to figure out if it's getting it's updates. I don't know how to tell, since there's no way I've found to a normal user interface. Every so often it just pops up and says it's doing something, but not antivirus. More like spam killer.

abri, You would do well to consider a program by Bill P studios called WINPATROL. I have used it on all of my systems for years. It is outstanding in every way. The free version lacks very little compared to the paid version, but I was so impressed that I bought it the first year I had it, as much to say "thank you" to Bill as to use the extra features. I cannot describe everything it does here, but it will give you control of the things you describe here without using msconfig, which is, indeed, meant to be a diagnostic tool (as mentioned earlier).

    No probs Abri,

Did you Block them with Defender and check with Regcleaner or just Delete the startups using Regcleaner and have them backed up?

    abri MajorGeek

    Hi Halo!
I skipped Defender as being too complicated and removed them from the start-up tab using regcleaner. I found them under another tab in Regcleaner, where I hope they will stay for the time being. :)

Ah ok, yes defender does have many options, thought regcleaner would do as I find it while an old app a very easy one to use, yep your correct they will be saved in the Backup tab in case you need to re-install them again.

Do remember if you update any of these apps its most likely they will put themselfs back into the startups again, but you now know how to remove them ;)
