When I try to use the system Configuration utility, I go to Start>Run and then I type in sysedit. THen it says, "windows cannot find sysedit" I need to open sysedit so that I can remove some virus entries. I could really use help. Thank you in advance.

Try this: (Windows explorer) Windows>system32; open folder, scroll until you see "sysedit.exe", double-click

I tried that, and it said " Windows cannot find file C:/Windows/System2/sysedit"

I think this might be because i had a virus. When I ran my Virus scanner, it deleted a load of files. Now half my programs don't work.

Try running your system file checker start>programs>accessories>system tools>system information then click the tools tab and then system file checker. When it comes up with corrupted or missing files just have it extract them from your disk. See if that helps.

I am trying that now, I'll post when I am done. I am also going to find a program to recover the files I deleted last night during the virus scan.

That scan didn't work, I am still going to recover the files.

If you know of any good free files, please tell me

There may be a utility here that can help you.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads8.html

Try that link and see if one of those utilities will halp you out. Also check to see if your antivirus has a vault. Some antivirus programs like AVG Free(lavasoft.com) have vaults where you can find a backup of deleted files from virus removal. I don't recommend replacing files from the virus vault, but you can get the file names you need from there so you can figure out what you need to replace.:)

Let us know if any of this helps.

I am considering reinstalling Windows XP. What will I lose if I do this. My computer is hella sluggish, even though I have defragmented many times and deleted temp files and many other things.

If you do a fresh install, it will wipe out all of your previously installled applications and files.

What I mean is that I ran msconfig and then left only the necessities unchecked.

What about the system restore utility that you run from DOS prompt. I had to run it once a long time ago, but I don't remember how to do it. I know you need a Win98 startup disk. This utility is suppose to rewrite the system files without reinstalling the whole system.

Colemanguy do you know which utility I'm talking about? I think it's something like sysres or sysrestore.exe?

This might help. I used it when I had W98Se and it may just work for you.

"Got problems and don't want to reinstall... Don't wanna lose any of your
settings or software? There's a command line option that'll get you back on
your feet in no time. Boot up your PC with a Windows 98 boot disk, pop in your
Windows 98 CD, and once you're at the command prompt, type your CD-ROM drive
letter immediately followed by a colon. So, if your CD was set to "D" you'd
enter D: and then hit ENTER. At this point, type the following command: SETUP
/pf. This switch will restore all of Windows critical files to their factory
state, and in 99% of situations doing this will fix whatever problems you were
having in Windows 98." - From the free Tips download at http://www.x9000.net/.

When you boot with your boot disk your drive letters may be different. Pay close attention to what shows on your screen relating to you drive letters. If you have two hard drives, your cd-rom may show up as F: or G: depending on what you have for hardware..;)

Sounds like your boot disk doesn't have all the needed files. You may have to try it this way.

That's microsofts how to on making a startup disk in DOS.
    Then try again.

I repaired XP. It seems that every time I restart the computer, it gets slower. I need Help, I am getting very very very very frustrated. I have no viruses. It seems like a simple task, takes up 99% of the processer.

Just for the record, I'll assume you followed the instructions here : http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

Can you find out what processes are using all the processor time?

Have you re-updated all the drivers since the repair install?

Have you got all the required XP patches since the repair install?

Have you re-tweaked your services using services.msc ?

  31. Jdban

    Jdban Corporal

My computer is virus, spyware, and adaware free.

I am still reupdating my drivers.

I am downloading all the windows updates.

And I have never messed with services.msc

I just checked the inside of my PC and everything is connected securely.

The problem is that my computer is hella laggy. Right now, windows update is using 91% of the CPU. as I open maple story, a mmorpg, it takes up about 20% and takes about one minute to open. On my laptop, which has a slower processer, it takes about 4 seconds to open and runs at 10%. It is very strange, because my 2.5 GHz is usually fast.

I am considering reinstalling windows and losing all my files. are there any ways not to lose programs that i installed and dont have the cd anymore. Any programs that do this stuff easier than burning everything onto dvds. I am not even sure if this will fix my problem. What should I do?
