    Hey Geeks,
I have a XP SP2 machine I would like to run windows system file checker on but I only have a XP SP1 disk. Anyone know how I get around this? An error message will appear if I try to run it with the SP1 disk stating that it is an older version than what I have. I dont have a SP2 versions unless I can get a SP2 Security Update disk to work. Thanks

Yeah, your CD needs to match your computer configuration (IE: current service pack) in order to run the system file checker. The best thing to do would be to slipstream SP2 onto your existing XP SP1 CD...you can find step-by-step instructions here:

    Thats incorrect.

If you have an XP Sp1 CD, and install Sp2, you can still run SFC.

    The reasoning:

Non-upgraded files will look to the CD, and upgraded ones will look to the servicpackfiles cache.

Hence the presence of sourcepath, servicepacksourcepath, and servicepackcachepath entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup.

I've never been able to get an older version CD to work with sfc, it always gives the 'older file version' error. Maybe I deleted too much when getting rid of the 'bloat' caused by service pack upgrades?

Possibly. Those files are there for a reason, not merely as bloat :)

Thanks Wavetar, I was able to slipstream a XP1 into a XP2 CD I will test the SFC with it sometime later. Thanks for links
