I have a retail version of XP Pro running on my computer. When I run sfc /scannow, I'm prompted to insert the XP CD. I've been ask to look at a friends computer is which ailing. It's an HP with preinstalled XP. No recovery CD's were supplied with the unit. If I try to run sfc on it, will it ask for a CD?

It will run OK without the CD, until it finds something that needs to be fixed. If you elect to fix an item, it will need the CD. You can always answer "IGNORE" to anything/everything, it finds, just to check out the system. With the HP, you will probably find that it is ailing because of other reasons that SFC won't fix anyhow. Bazza

Thanks for the help Bazza. I'll see what's going on when I get my hands on the unit.

You're welcome. I might not be able to reply to anything else for 14 days, or so. So don't think I am ignoring you, if you ask further questions. Someone else from MG will step in to assist further, I am sure, if required. Bazza

BTW, the System File Checker in XP doesn't have an IGNORE button.

It only has Retry, More Information or Cancel.

If you want to skip a file, you need to press Cancel.
