System hangs after showing desktop

i cant quite remember when or who, but i think that this might fix the problem of the system hanging for a few mins at startup, not being able to click on anything etc.:

In my case, it was that I had about 4 network connections listed that didn't exist on my computer. I deleted them (win XP network connections) and the hangups stopped.
I guess XP was trying to access each listed connection on bootup.

Mine would freeze for 2 to 5 minutes.
