system idle process

My HP Pavillion became very slow suddenly. When checking processes in the task manager box, the system idle process is always running at values of 90 or more. Is this normal? I suspect this might be the problem but because it is part of the system, the computer will not allow me to shut it off. Any suggestions?

yes that is normal figure to have when your CPU is doing nothing, mine is at 95~99% at present as all i'm doing is surfing the net with no other programs running apart from background tasks like AV, moving the mouse around quickly will change that figure as the cpu is doing something.

Have you defragged of late?

Also have you checked for Virii or Spyware? if not check this guide out READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal jsut to make sure its not a virii/spyware thats slowing your PC down.

I have Spy Sweeper which I run a couple of times a week. I also use trend micro and run that regularly. A while back I had a virus that infected Norton Antivirus among many other files and I had to uninstall Norton and downloaded Trend Micro instead. Nothing but cookies comes up in any of my sweeps. Is it possible there's a change in some settings or something's up with some hidden files? The computer is very slow when changing tasks. Within a task it is fine but to close a window or web page or to click onto a program or change web pages there is a big delay. The kids won't bother to use it for im because it's too slow. They can type quickly but to send a message it takes too long.
