    Hi
I have several problems I need help with.
First System information does not respond, clicking on it does nothing not even error message. How can I fix that.

Second, everytime I boot my puter I get a warning that ntoskrnl has been modified and is trying to access internet. How can I stop it or get rid of it.

Third printer is not responding and no error message, but if I reboot it prints the previous print jobs, how to fix this.

    System Info:
    CPU P4A 2.8 Ghz
    OS XP home
    MEM 1 Gb

Hi, and welcome to MajorGeeks! :) From reading your post, it would seem that you might be better off visiting the SpyWare Specific forum on this board. Follow all the stickies at the top of the page and post back if the Spyware guys didn't fix your problems. :)

    For the msinfo issue:

    start, run, regsvr32 jscript.dll

    Click ok.

did that and it said the operation was successful but it still does not display my system information and no error messages, any other way to fix it.
    Thanks

Thanks! Forgot about that one. MSINFO32 requires Help and Support service to be running. Is it running on your machine?

Also, what service pack are you running?

I never had to have help and support service to run to have system information displayed.

    Adrynalyne
It seems the operation fixed my printer problem, that is one down 2 to go.
    Thanks

Well, when I checked out that program last night, it didn't run on my machine, because I had help and support disabled. That was the main reason I said you need to check help and support within the service manager.

Try the link below, scroll down to line #221 and run the Restore System Information (Msinfo32)

Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

It ask me is it OK to add to the registry and I click yes.
Can give me instructions what to do next or was it wrong what I did.

    Thanks

Sounds like you did it right, still no System Information?

Restart your computer and check again.

"The following program has recently been modified and is trying to access the Internet
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe"

    Name: NT kernal and system

I recommend not allowing access if you are not absolutely sure that the modification is due to an update.

If you suspect that something else has modified the ntoskrnl, then follow the instructions in this thread to make sure that it is not some form of malware modifing the ntoskrnl.

Ok I followed the steps in the HOW TO....
But at the 4 steps that must be run if I boot in safe mode my wireless internet access is not available and also the SPYWARE FILES with spyware applications I created in the desktop is also not available, so I went ahead in NORMAL mode and did the scans and so now I am up to OPTIONAL Steps: require reboot in normal mode( which I already in anyway). Do you want me to proceed or do you have other recommendation to consider.
    Thanks

Did the scans find anything? Were you able to clean everything the scans found?

I wouldn't be overly concerned about ntoskrnl.exe needing access to the interenet. If you aren't sure what modified the kernal then just block it from access.

If you want I can look at your HijackThis log. Post it as an attachment, DO NOT post it inline. Run HijackThis from C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Unzip the file to the previously mentioned directory. DO NOT run it from the zip file or any other location on your hard drive. HijackThis 1.99.1

I am not clear what you mean by 'DO NOT post it online' so hopefully it is OK to attach my hijackthis log file in here.
BTW the scans did not find anything.
It is true I can disallow the internet access of ntoskrnl but some how I feel much better if I can get rid of the application that cause it, can it be done by going in the registry.
    Thanks

    Your HJT log is clean.

Like I said in Post #19 the ntoskrnl can be, and often is modified by a windows update.

If the scans found no malware on your system, and your HJT log is clean, you are mostly likely safe. It doesn't appear that anything 'bad' is modifing the ntoskrnl. Just block it from access.

Thanks for checking my HJT log.
I like to update you on what my next experiences, my system is attached to a external 80Gb drive which I diviup into 5 logical drives and normally I use only one to store my stuff and all this time I have not bothered to check it's contents untill this evening and to my surprise the other 4 drives has copys of the same files.

So I was deleting these files and the first two went OK when deleting files on the third drive there is a changelog file that cannot be deleted. I check the first two drives and again the files get reinstalled I repeat this operation at least five times with the same result.

I run all the recommended spyware and Panda Titanium AV on the drives but it cannot find anything.

So I decided to detached the external HDD, what happenned was my wireless driver is messedup which I had to delete and reinstall.

Also I rebooted at least five times and did not notice the NTOSKRNL problem but my joy was dashed when the last reboot the animal showed up again.
That was after install the Airlink wireless driver.

I have not connected the external HDD yet.

What software can I use that will find 99% of the crap on PC's. I know there is something lurking on that external HDD and maybe in my puter also.

    Thanks for your attention.

The tutorial I linked to will find and eradicate most of the 'badies' that can infoect your system. When you run Virus scans you have to make sure that all you're hard drives are selected to be scanned. When in safe mode XP only loads the minimal drives needed to operate the system, so a removable USB device like your HDD won't get scanned. I would scan the USB HDD, from normal mode, following the tutorial I linked to in POST #19 of this thread.

I like to update on my system.
I finally found out what caused the NTOSKRNL.exe request to access the internet, it is my wireless card if I disable my card or uninstall the driver then there is no request to access the net.

So now we know what is causing it, what do I do to stop this annoying pop-up.

    Thanks
