I have sworn by it for years, but the new version required I pay again and I didnt think that was reasonable as the price is a bit high. Now I use the free RegCleaner to clean my registry and HD_Cleaner to clean my hard drive.

In the last few versions he added a reg cleaner, but the drive cleaning utility is superb. Once you set your options the first time, its easier from there.

Everyone knows I am a big software buyer, if its worth it, ill pay it and smile about it, but if its a ripoff, I will scream bloody murder too.

Case in point, been using Nero Burning Rom for CD writing for at least 4, maybe 5 years now and theres a new version out. The new version is expensive, but its now an all in one suite with DVD writing and more, so I have no complaints after using a peice of software for that long for 40 dollars and a company ups the price but adds a ton of new, needed features.

this program is not worth it. There are better programs out there that will do the same if not more for less the money. I like one called Ace Utilities I use it everyday. Even though Reg supreme managed to find around 217 more obsolete entries then ace utilities.

Ace utilities does a whole lot more than just clean the registry.

System Mechanic... awesome to say the least. It does more than just clean the registry. It's still one of the programs I use on a daily basis (or at least 4-5 times a week). My main use for it is to clean history, cookies, and temporary internet files. I love it.

IE will do that for you on close.

I like the feature that allows you to choose which cookies to keep and which to delete. I have System Mechanic 4 Professional. The only problem I had was when I installed the optional Antivirus and Firewall. Iolo (the Syst Mech manufacturer) doesn't support these optional components, and Panda wasn't any help either. Fortunately I found a solution on a Microsoft Community website.

Most decent programs allow you to keep various cookies.

System mechanic was okay, but it soon became bloatware, with needless programs tacked on.

I also found it left behind a lot of stuff that other programs found.

There are much better programs around, and a lot of them are free.

Is there any freeware that you can recommend? I find a lot of the free stuff I've downloaded from PC World and Downloads.com work better than "commercial" software so I'm not afraid to use freeware.

With System Mechanic I find the pop-up stopper works well. It seems to block pop-ups that Yahoo doesn't stop. Like I said ealier, I like the cookie filter. I also like the memory defrag tool and the Start Up GUI (vs using MSCONFIG).

A huge complaint I had with System Mechanic 4 Pro was the reatil packaging said that it elimitated Spyware, but it turns out that the feature is VERY weak and you have to buy another Iolo product!!! I complained like a mad man and they sent me a link to a site where I could download a virus and spyware scanner.

    Try these 3, Cleanup! www.stevengould.org/ , CrapCleaner, aka CCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4191 and EmpTemp http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1575 ,

as a 3 pronged attack on stuff accumulated after every net session.

I have been using these 3, all FREE, for ages now. Each finds stuff the other 2 miss.

One word of warning though, check out the defaults on all 3, if you want to keep certain cookies. By default, each wipes all cookies and history. It doesn't bother me, as I keep my favourite sites as "favourites".

I just let them wipe everything, each time I run them. Cleanup! from steven gould, (latest version, not the program of the same name, listed on MG) keeps a total of files deleted in the latest run, plus a running total of all files deleted, to date.

It is not uncommon for it to delete 1500+ files at a time, on my PC. Bazza
