system process problem

In the Task Manager there's a process running called System, under the user name SYSTEM. Once every few seconds it jumps from 0% CPU usage to 20-ish, causing a small stuttering in my computer that gets really annoying and renders game play nigh impossible. Even as I type this, the fluid, constant stream of letters appearing in the text box is occasionally interrupted for just a second. Does anyone know how to fix this, or if it's safe, how to disable System so it stops the stuttering?

BTW in the CPU usage history, when I watch it for a minute, it's just a big zigzag line because of the cpu spikes.

And these are the procedures that I've undergone so far to fix this:

Reboot
System restore
Anti-virus
Ad-aware
Spybot
Defrag
Clicking End Process on "system", it has no effect; it does nothing
Reinstalling video drivers
Installing different, updated video drivers
Opened case to check loose parts

Anyone have any suggestions?

 

Reboot into safe mode. Does the System process continue to do what you are talking about?

One "FIX" is to uninstall all your drivers, and install new updated drivers for all your hardware.

That is strange, I can't offer advice sadly but would recommend you use Process Explorer as it is a lot more informative than Task Manager:

It will allow you a lot greater analysis capacity and you can right click on any running process and google it to explore it further.
