Vista SP2 - Sony Vaio Desktop PC

I have an issue with System Restore, MS Security Essentials, and services.
I was using IE9 and had some extension issues. Could not get active x controls to work properly and thought I would save myself some time and do a system restore. That is when I discovered that Rstrui.exe was not working. Also MSE and Windows Updates.

Error code is 0x81000202 and 8145.
I immediately ran Mbam full and found nothing. Ran Combo Fix, and found nothing.

Here are a couple more things I tried.
Uninstalled SP2 and did a full reinstall of SP2 with the KB Download.
Tried a Vista Repair with a Slipstream disk (sp2)
Tried a Vista Reinstall with Slipstream disk as upgrade - would not work.
Created a new user and still an issue.

I have a current Geek Squad MRI and I used it to fix some registry errors, but still not working.

The pc is usable but of course I want the system features to work properly.

I can do a full reinstall, but I have a lot of programs installed and I hate to have to start over.

I would like to know if I install Windows 7 as an upgrade, would that erase the problems?

Is it possible I am using the Slipstream disk wrong.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks
    Susan

The first error code indicates System Restore is not working. The second did not return any results whatsoever.

Go to Start>Computer>C:>Users> then right click your folder, left click properties, and tell us the date so we know how old this install is. Also, is this the original hard drive the computer came with?

the second error was 0x8 Something ending with 8154. I can't find my note with the full code. But MS gives the same description as the first one.

    Yes this is original HDD.
    Setup Date is November 2006.

    All hardware passes.

So that date would indicate you have never refreshed the operating system in over seven years? I actually do it once a year on principle.

As far as running Windows 7 you would most likely have no issues. What is the model of your VAIO? You can post a Speccy report which would help immensely:
