system restore/IE not working

    So a little more detail..

A program on the computer auto updated.. I'm guessing either Norton or XP SP2, I'm not exactly sure, I wasn't around for that. So on the next restart System Restore shows up blank if it even shows up at all. Internet Explorer comes up blank below the Address Bar, and various other programs have Notifications, menus, update information, blank.

I'm guessing it is a script error. I talked to some other people, and I did Run: regsvr32 jscript.dll, regsvr32 vbscript.dll, and regsvr32 /i __html file (or close) that was recommended as procedure. It didn't work.

I looked on what I believe was Microsoft's site and it said that there were 3 Inproxserver32 folders in regedit that needed to have the default files with values reading C:\windows\system32\jscript.dll. Instead, 2 of the 3 defaults read C:\program files\common files\symantec shared\script blocking\scrauth.dll. So I change them to what they're supposed to read, and it does nothing. And after the restart, the defaults change back to C:\program files\..........\scrauth.dll. So that did not work either.

Also, I've checked the system restore program control setting was on Automatic and what not that other people had suggested also.

I'm at a loss. I can't roll back prior the update, safe mode has the same problems. None of the manual editing works thus far. I don't know enough about exactly what type of scripts are used to know what the problems are.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

I'd be seriously concerned about malware first. Do you have such things as The Microsoft Antispyware Tool, Spybot Search and Destroy or whatever your favorite (for me that means free, too) tools are? Have you updated and run them, and also NAV? After updating them, rebooting into safe mode helps the software to be able to delete/repair malware files.

Next I'd run SFC. If I couldn't get on line or use a browser, I'd run sfc first. You need a copy of a "real" windows install CD, or you need to find a folder named i386 on a restore CD if it's there, and put it in your cdrom. A copy of a friend's install CD will work here if it's the correct (home or pro) version of xp.

Click Start > Run and then type:

    sfc /scannow

and hit enter. Note the space after sfc.

Let it run. It will show a progress indicator, but won't verify that it completed. The indicator just goes away. If it stops and asks for the CD, browse to and show it the i386 folder. You will have transferred a whole new set of necessary system files to replace corrupt ones when this is done. That includes IE.

Matacumbie, I tried that and it did not work, which I did do in safe modeand then in normal mode after.
Also, another problem.. safe mode turns blank.. The start menus/icons disappear after a few seconds. the only way I can run stuff in safe mode is using Ctrl-Alt-Delete task manager, going to run task, and browsing .exe that way.

So, as far as the sfc /scannow, I've been looking for the CD. I have a burned XP NON-SP2 cd lying around as a copy but for the Validated SP2 CD (which belongs to the computer that is messed up), we're still trying to locate it after our move.

But the Script fix didn't work

Thanks for the help guys, if the Safe Mode Blankness helps with diagnostic, let me know.

Try IEFIX, that does the same thing as SFC (as far as IE is concerned) without having to worry about a SP2 CD.

Having said that, Internet Explorer is very buggy and stubborn, and sometimes (read a lot) nothing works :(

I tried that IEFIX program and it asked for the SP2 cd..

    Thanks for the help..

Couldn't you point it to your files on your hard drive?

Alright.. ran the /sfc scannow and it fixed the problems..

Now to try to fix the winfixer pop up..

    Thanks for all the suggestions..

I really appreciate all the help..

As you know, XP keeps a duplicate backup set of the critical %systemroot% files. If memory serves, it's %systemroot% cache.dll. Every time XP boots, it checks those files in use against the backups and if any are corrupt or missing, it replaces them from those backups. That's a key reason we don't have to reinstal XP regularly the way we used to with Win98.

When the system file checker (sfc) asks for the CD, it has found that some of the files in use and also the backup files are corrupt and wants to replace all of them.

If the backup files are OK, it doesn't ask for the CD.

As you also know, it is very common for serious malware to attack the cache.dll as well as the files that are in use. It is also common that if the IE files are corrupt from malware, so may some of the %systemroot% files be corrupt.

Bad Tuna, for the popups, try the MalWare Removal forum, and pay particular attention to the stickies.

thanks guys.. I used the MajorGeeks suggested removal for the winfix problem.. Symantec Trojan.Vundo Removal Tool .. And It blue screened in the middle of it. So on the restart the log said that there were traces detected in the winlogon and explorer. So.. I'm trying to figure that out as well.. Hopefully I can figure something out.

    Thanks for all the help.
