System Restore on Win2k?

Just happened to find this and I'm wondering if it backs up the same thing that Windows XP System Restore does. Anyone?

WinXP System Restore extends the backup beyond the "Boot Files", but in a recovery situation, then they both provide the same ability. Though with the obvious change that WinXP System Restore automaticly creates backup every day and before any major event.

Wow. So pretty much it is the same. The only things missing are the local profiles and "monitored" files, which, again, are pretty easy to add in. I backed it up to a directory on my machine and ended up with ~230 MB of stuff. I then compressed it with NTFS compression down to ~140 MB (which make me wonder why it doesn't do that automatically).

Are WinXP Restore Points created automatically? I know that they're created at install time and whenever directed to. But does the system ever decide to do it itself?

Windows XP System Restore does indeed copy Sam hives.

 

Just in addition to the above, we have had people do system restore in the past and end up locked out of their systems because they didn't know their old passwords after manually replacing their registry That in itself was rare, but I saw it happen a few times.

 

Just provided the "facts" from the M$-Website, but I guess they are able to make mistakes too .

But it is good to know that one should be becareful with going back to a restore point, incase one is changing password periodicaly.

 

Yeah you would think they would know their own product a little better
