    Hi guys,

I'm wondering if you can help me.

    System restore appears to have disabled its self, when I try to use it it says;

'System Restore has been turned off by group policy. To turn on System Restore, contact your domain administrator'

So anyway I followed the windows guide (which is the same as the guide on here) to turn system restore back on, but when I right click my computer & go to properties, there is no tab for system restore at all, so I simply can't enable it again (I use XP)

Any idea's on how to fix this ?

    Many thanks

    Hi Halo,

I typed gpedit.msc in 'run' and it gives me an error message saying it can't be found..

the XP you have is Home I take it then?

goto Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > and look to see if the System Restore service has been stopped or disabled.. if so make sure its started and the Startup Type is set to Automatic.

plus try the first part of this Resolution ( it does involve editing the registry so making a backup of the key you are about to delete is urged... just right click the folder and choose export ) and see if those values are at that location?

Thanks Halo, this has done the trick but System Restore won't restore to any point it seems, keeps failing.

See my problem is I have a Trojan.Vundo.B virus in my Windows/Fonts directory which Norton tells me is there, can't do anything about it but the popup wont close, so I permanently have to drag the popup warning to the bottom of my screen everytime I boot up. I have read the guide on here how to remove it but it doesnt work, also I tried the Symnatec program which wont remove it.

Tried downloading manual Norton updates but says my subscription has expired, tried reinstalling but have the same problem even though it hasnt expired.

No idea what I can do to be honest, cant even remove it in safe mode :(

Try looking around Symantec's support for help on that subscription issue... hey you've paid for it so should be getting updates.

    Intelligent Updater changes from Symantec

    Important changes to Intelligent Updater

For retail editions of Norton AntiVirus, Intelligent Updater now searches for a valid subscription to virus definitions before it applies updates. Corporate versions of Norton AntiVirus are not affected by this change.

Just another reason to stop using Norton. They get you for the purchase then another $34 a year to keep the defs updated. Might as well buy a new retail package every year at those prices. Try one of these AntiVir Personal Edition Avast! Home Edition AVG Free Edition, all free, all fairly descent.

If you paid for a subscription then I would get that sorted out with the folks at Symantec. You paid for it, you might as well get your moneys worth from it.

Live update on Norton works fine, its the manual updates that dont. Am I missing out by only using Live Update or does it do everything that the intelligent update does ?

Definately changing to another protection program once this one expires, not happy with Norton at all. Macafee any good ??

Your not missing anything by using Live Update. Intelligent Updater is for when Live Update isn't working or for deployment on large networks.

I dumped Norton a while back. Use AVG Free Edition now and am happy with its performance.

McAfee Pro or Enterprise versions yes, but as listed earlier by Shadow here at Majorgeeks we have a nice collection of FREE ones, personal favs are Avast and AVG.... these will cost you nada, zilch, not a sausage to update!

Thanks guys, think I'll move onto one of those programs then once my Norton subscription has expired (which isn't until next March anyway!)

On another subject, I have a program (a demo of a game) that has been sat on my desktop for nearly a year now as everytime I try to delete it it says its in use by another program (even when I try in safe mode)

Worst part is, the demo doesnt even work anyway ! Any clues on how to rid myself of this ?

I used Pocket Killbox to get rid of a file off my desktop the other day that was doing the same thing. I selected the Delete on Reboot option.

Thanks Shadow, thats gotten rid of that program, however while I'm pouring my issues out into the open, I have just one more.

There is a folder in my C drive that wont let me access it, when I try to open it (its an old file from a deleted computer game) it says the file is not accesible & access is denied. Again deleting it in safe mode has brought no joy & this program you just gave me a link to doesnt do the trick either. Any idea's ?

Try changing the access permissions of the file with the Secutiy Tab.

    If that doesn't work:

    1. boot to safe mode

    2. CTRL-ALT-DEL, Click on Processes Tab, Stop all unknown processes. close taskmanger.

    3. START=>RUN=>CMD

    4. at command prompt enter del /folder/file

    5. if that doesn't work enter attrib -r -s -h filename

    6. Repeat step 4

    7. if none of the above works try Move on Boot
