Recently I got a problem with system Restore and Sound device.
The volume icon in the taskbar didn’t work. I removed and when trying to place again the icon in the taskbar I got this error:

    ‘Error
Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.’

I tried to use the System Restore to an early point to fix the problem, but System Restore doesn’t work at any point.
I’ve checked and System Restore is ON. I got all the updates from Windows Update.
I've made Error Checking and Defragment thinking that it might help. But it didn't help and got a bit worst. Windows get longer to start and don't know why every time i open Outlook Express, Windows Messenger opens (this never happens before.

    Any help much apreciated.

System Restore doesn't fix everything. I'm not sure how it works exactly, but it will do things like restore to before you installed a program. I don't think it restores deleted files or removed devices.

I would like to know how you removed the volume control, there is no option for that in the taskbar item's menu.

To fix the outlook problem, just go to options in the tools menu and there will be a checkbox somewhere which says something like "automatically login to Windows Messenger". I forget where it is on the options screen because i don't have outlook but i fixed it for my dad just last week so i should remember :).

    Hi, thanks for help,
As the volume icon didn’t work. I went to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices. On the volume tab check/uncheck box for Place volume icon in the taskbar.

The volume icon on the taskbar was from the default Sound device that came with the pc I didn’t install. The rest of the Sound Device works fine, I just cannot leave the icon volume on the task bar anymore. Every time I try I got the error.
The problem with System Restore is not that it doesn’t fix the volume problem; the problem is that System Restore doesn’t work. Every time I try I got an other error:
“System Restore can not get back to the selected point”

That was my first thought went to Outlook Express> Tools. But the box that says Automatically log on to Windows Messenger is unchecked already. So no idea how to stop Messenger.

    Any suggestion?

When i did it, Messenger stopped logging in automatically but it would still start up. I don't know if you can stop it from starting but i didn't bother to find out because it just minimises to the taskbar and closes when Outlook is closed. I assume the same thing happens with you?

And i'm afraid i can't help you with your main problem. The only thing i could suggest is to re-install the sound driver (but you'd have to ask someone else how to do that).
