Please see the attachment as to the problem I have with system restore.
When I boot up the slide bar has returned to he far left = 0 bytes nd system rstore is off.
I can slide the bar as in XP but it returns to the lft when I close the window.
I have had no success with this feature since i got the pc + Dell says there is nothing wrong with it.
    Am I doing something wrong.
There is also a drive listed with C: etc called C: missing which I do not understand.
    Thank you

    Hi Peter

I see you have Norton on your PC and as it creates protected files liek the Recycle Bin, just to test disable Norton and reboot and see if you can adjust the slider for System Restore

But with the error message I belive its the fact that the Restore Partition drive is listed as a drive Monitored by System Restore and that is throwing out errors as in this for Windws Vista HERE, should be the same in Win7.

Could you post a screenshot of that screen and listing?

So disable System Restore for all drives and shutdown, then reboot and enable only your C: drive for system restore and see if that helps.

    Hi D
I removed Norton and there was no difference.
I have attached a screen shot showing the second C: which has the word missing next to it.
I have done all you said to do when I clicked Vista.
    I'll wait to hear.
    Thank you
    P.

I turned system restore off and rebooted. I then put it back on.
The atttachment is now what I see but am unable to turn 'recovery' off. The directions call for turning all drives off except C: but I cannot.
I can only hilite lines or items with a blue bar when I click on one.
I will now create a point and see tomorrow what I can do.

I'm sorry to be late with this reply so I could save you all some work.
I kept working on this and found that as soon as I turned system retore off the on again all seems to be working.
I can move the bar to create a point and revert settings back a day or when ever.

One question remains, the words to the left of the 'create' box say," Create a restore point right now for the drives that have system protection turned on."

AsI have previously stated, I have no way to turn drives on or off but can put a blue bar across the drive in the box, hilighting it.
Please see the attachment that demonstares this ;recovery in particular is on as well as C: while only J: usb drive is off.

Can you actually click a button to turn a drive on and off?
I will enter safe mode and see what happens but I believe I have done this as one of my trouble shooting steps.

    perspective

I guess my limitations contribute to my having issues with restoring. I try to simulate catastrophe rather than backup and "wait to see if it works."
When I got my pc the system restore was off and nothing would budge. I have had to work lots to get it to work. Turning it off them back on seemed to really help.I could finally move the slide bar without gettting an error message.
Acronis used to be good until the last backup. Then I went from 15 minutes to 30 minutes to backup.
Macrium has helped me three times and failed me once.
I have consumed so much time and energy that I hardly get responses about the problems.
That is a clue to me to stop and settle with what I have.
Currently system restore seems to be functional, Macrium seems to be working. Also I do have my 2 dvds I created when I first got the machine to restore to factory settings. I have used all of these and things seems to be OK.
I have tendency to be over enthusiastic about "how" something works, therefore I persevere, at times too much.
I have received more that ample support especially in this forum for which I am appreciative.

    Hi Peter

Can you not disable/untick the "Recovery" drive in System Restore as I believe this is your problem in that the Dell recovery Partition is being seen as a drive to add to system restore but as its HDD space is limited its erroring!

Yeah Macrium Reflect is good as is Easeus ToDo and well I still find Acronis Ti fine, but its a personal preference and if Macrium is working for you, keep on using it.

As you have removed Norton to test, my only final answer is that the install of Windows 7 from Dell is a corrupt one and likely best option is to re-install (personally I hate OEM installs and in work we flat and re-install any PC we get from Dell or HP as those are our perferred suppliers)

    David
First, I have already done a format and reinstallation with the two dvds I created when I received the pc.
Second, I have included a snap of disk management regarding drives being recognized there. You may wish to view them, or not.
Third, I noticed you said,"my only final answer," and wonder if you wish to consider this issue closed?
In any case, I do not have any regress with Dell that I am aware of as I did not buy the software warranty -only the hadeware one.
You have done more than your share of helping so I will understand whatever you wish to do and am grateful for all you have done.
    Peter.
