hi, new to the forums, just wondering how i do a system restore for windows 98 second edition, and whether or not there are any dangers other than losing relatively recent files.

Start>programs>accessories>system tools>click on system restore. Click to put dot in "Restore my computer to an earlier date"> ok. This will bring up a calendar with highlighted dates. Chose one (click)> ok. Your computer will then start the restore process. Do not navigate nor open/close anything during the process. Be sure your browser is closed before you start. :)

by the way, this is merely a solution that i came up with to try and get rid of a problem i've been having with my internet... every time i go to check hotmail it redirects to about:blank and brings up a pop up to kill spyware that's on my computer. if i restore to a date before this started happening, will everything be all right if I avoid the site which gave me this hijacker? or would it be simpler to run about buster?

just checked for system restore under system tools and the closest i could find was system information, and system moniter. are you sure this is for second edition?

Neither Win 98 nor 98SE have System Restore. Win ME and XP do.

ah, no problem, guess i'll have to try something else... btw, how would i undo something i did when using hijack this, if something started causing errors? Guess I'll be really careful if it comes to that.

You don't do it the first time!! HJT is for advanced users only and should be used by the less knowledgable with the advice and counsel of advanced users only!!

you can do a system restore in win98se by rebooting in dos then at the C prompt type in scanreg/restore it will give you four or five backup dates to choose from. gaaack2003 ;) ;)

I'm not absolutely certain, but I THINK that all that does is let you select one of the "last known good" registry backups Win 98 saves. It won't resore the SYSTEM; it will just take you back to an earlier version of the registry. Handy if you screw up your registry and Windows won't boot normally.
