System shutdown

I have a Biostar P4M900-M4 motherboard that is supposed to take up to 3.4 GHZ CPU.

I was using a 2.66 MHZ CPU in it and it worked great. I decided to upgrade it to a 3.3 GHZ Hyper Threading CPU but it runs from a cold start about 2 minutes and it appears to have a thermal shutdown but I was watching the CPU temp and it was no where near the shutdown temp. After the initial 2 minutes shutdown it shuts down even sooner such as about one minute or 45 seconds. Thinking I got a marginal CPU I ordered another one. This time it is a 3.2 GHZ Hyper Threading CPU and it does exactly like the previous one.

I would expect a bad or marginal motherboard but I have another motherboard just like this one running day and night with a 3.3 GHZ Hyper Threading CPU. In addition this one works with a 2.66 GHZ CPU. These are all Intel CPU's by the way.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Why do you think it's a "thermal shutdown"?

Any beeps from the board?

Are the Bios versions for the two boards the same?

Have you tried turning off HyperThreading?

When the "shutdown" occurs, are you in Windows? What version?

 

Okay we were both on the right track. When I upgraded the board from a 2.2 GHZ to a 3.2 GHZ I did not upgrade the fan. Who would have thunk it?
I checked the specks on the original fan and it was good up to 2.26 GHZ. (Oops!) I replaced it with a fan that is good up to 2.4 GHZ and now it works fine.
I noticed while watching the CPU temp that it would not go above 78C then it would power down. Now it does not go above 46C with the new fan and heat sink.
