Ok, so we think we've saved the system's O/S, but for the fact that system tools is empty (as was the 'My Documents' folder which turned out to have the hidden attribute turned on.) Manual removal of that attribute was easily accomplished, my question is what of the seemingly empty system tools?
    Sucessfully removed the rootkit.
    Completely disgusting!

Hopefully you did not run CCleaner or any other disk cleaning program as it may have removed hidden backups if you did.

Please download and save the below tool from Grinler @ bleepingcomputer to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

Now run it. Now see if you can find the items that seemed to be missing?

What version of Windows is being used?

Thank you very much, the system was XP. I will report back when I find out the results :D
