Hi. I have an older system that will not complete its boot cycle. I ran a recovery and it did not fix it. The operating system is windows 2000. I also tried putting in a new hard drive, but get a similar result. When I put in the recovery CDs, they seem to go through everything fine. However, when the reboot starts, it goes through bios, the windows start screen, and then it just stops. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

    Thanks in advance.

Will the system boot in safe mode?
    1. Restart the computer.
    2. Press F8 when you receive the following message:
Please select the operating system to start
    3. In Windows Advanced Option Menu, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.

I did try to boot in safe mode, but it does the same thing...

    OK
This is a little tricky but it might help figure out what is happening.
First: at the f8 menu enable bootlogging
Second: once again at the f8 menu opt for safe mode with command prompt
The screen will display a lot, very fast, but if you wait it will eventually give you a black dos window with a command prompt (c:\ etc) type:
    "type c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt"
    (without the quotation marks)
The "type" command will display what is in this file whicdh is a log of everything that occurred during your bootup.
A great deal of material will be displayed very rapidly.
The only thing I am interested in at this time is the final entry.
Hopefully with this we will be able to figure out where the boot is hanging.

Ok I will try that. I have another problem to resolve now. The can't get the system to fire up. I am not sure if the motherboard failed or if their is something not plugged up on the power supply. The power supply seems to be putting out voltage ~3.6v. I'm not sure if something got unplugged and that is preventing it from powering up or whether it is something else. I do have one cable labeled fan jumper that I am not sure where it lands. It is on the corner of the motherboard. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it or not.

    Any ideas on that?

    Thanks for the help.

It is essential that the fan be hooked up properly.
If it isn't, the motherboard will not power up.
This is a safety feature to keep you from accidently running the computer without the fan.
It may be labeled on the motherboard itself, where it goes.
If you have the make and model of the motherboard I might be able to find a schematic that shows where it is supposed to be connected.

Could it possibly be the motherboard failed?

Of course it is possible that the motherboard has failed.
But before you go through the hassle of replacing it (and subsequently the reloading of your OS), it is best to see if there is anything else that might be the cause of your problem.
