System won't Reboot Automatically

When I am trying to install new applications which require a reboot, after selecting "reboot" nothing happens. Same thing when I try a restart for the windows menu.

The only thing I can do is a complete log off which does not allow the completion of the installation of some applications.

I was going to try to reinstall my Windows XP - however, my system is currently running on Service Pack 2 which windows is recognizing as a newer version and won't allow me to do a repair.

    Any Suggestions????

    1. Ctrl+alt+del click on Shutdown and select Restart
    2. Start/Run and type in %windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -r -t 0

Neither of these will work - -

The only way I can shut down is Ctrl+Alt+Del and then disconnect all user. Then it will allow me to Shut Down.

This is a problem - - I am trying use Acronis, however, because I can do a restart, when the system shuts down, it closes the application and doesn't allow for the changes to my partition I have requested.

That sounds like you have something running that shouldn't be. I don't run XP so I'm going to have to try and search to see what that means.

    1. Click Start, then Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
    2. Go to System Tools/Shared Folders/Sessions
    3. On the Action menu, click Disconnect All Sessions (this will disconnect all users)

Do this before you run Acronis.

    Still didn't work....

I did get Acronis to work (did a manual restart by pushing power button - big NO - NO, but got desperate).

Would still like to see if there is a way to get this fixed. When other users try to Log Off, using Start - Log Off - Log Off, nothing happens. It does allow Start - Log Off - Switch Users. To log them off, I need to go under User Account in Control Panel and manually disconnect them.

Do you think the only fix for this is to remove Service Pac II and reinstall XP (again, it won't allow me to reinstall my XP because it is saying a newer version is running).

Try it from Safe Mode and report back.
