I upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro and my system tray disappeared. The Microsofy knowledgebase was of no help.

Indeed, even Google isn't much help. Something you could try is installing Superantispyware, available here at Major Geeks. In it's "preferences" screen, under the "repair" tab, there's an option to "enable system tray". Obviously it's meant for when certain spyware disables the systray, but I'm thinking whatever parameter it fixes in the registry will apply to this as well. Worst comes to worst, you'll have a decent anti-spyware program to use on your computer.
