Takes mins to save to NAS

Hi,

Our home network is very slow when we save files to our NAS. As we put in a new router and NAS drive at the same time I am not sure which of these are causing the problem. There are 2 Dell computers that are used as workstations (same specs) connected to the network and one Laptop. When we are working a Photoshop file or even a plain html file located on the NAS it can take up a 2 mins for it to save - even longer for the photoshop file – we clocked it to 4mins today.

If I for example copy a file between the computers the speed is about 85MB/.
If Computer 1 copy a file to a Mapped drive on the NAS the speeds is about 15-18 MB/s. The speed is pretty much the same when copying a file from the NAS to computer 1.

I have simple start-up script that runs every time the computers start to map the different drives. The script uses only “net use [path] persistent:yes”. Most of the times when we start the computers up the script is unable to map the drives on the NAS.

I think it might be the NAS that is the bottleneck but want to be sure before I spend a few hundred dollars on a new NAS. How can I be sure that it is the NAS on not the router that is the issue.
The speeds noted above are from windows pop-up which means it is not the most accurate.

Router: Netgear DGN3500 Gigabit router
NAS: Seagate GoFlex_Home
Using Cat5e cables - Gigabit
NIC on computers are Gigabit

Any suggestions on how speed things up or narrow down the issue would be most appreciated.

With a NAS device, I prefer home brew, like http://www.freenas.org/

Looks like, I'll be upgrading our test lab, soon, didn't realize the new version was out. Though, we use iSCSI to connect to it. (software based)
