Hello to everybody that reads this and sorry for the future long/nonsense making post. But I am in need of help. I've posted a thread like this but I did not go through the detail maybe and I am also in a different ball park now. I was in an accident (with my ex best friend). He drove drunk. The thing is we got in a 1 car accident going over 100 mph and roll it over and back into a ditch. Anyways we get out and walk to this house which is a mile from the scene. We call a friend to come get us and they did(as the cops were on the scene a few blocks down) we could see them! Anyways we hurry to the house(the cops are right on our tails) I run inside and sit and drink a beer. Anyways cops come and talk to us.. and anyways the cops asked me if I was in the car driving or what? I said no. He then came back saying my friend told them"we have not left the house all night.. infact someone must have taken his car from his house" the cop asked if that was correct I was drunk and said yes. Anyways my friend gets arrested and beat up by the cops in the road. 15 minutes later 10 cop cars roll up and come get me saying I was arrested for lieing. I said alright.. they said he admitted at the station.. SO I go down get booked.. questioned.. I tell all the truth now...Friend arrested for DUI (his resisting was taken off due to cops made his face a bloody mess..) when he really wasn't fighting back(and I hate him so I still wouldn't lie for him).. anyways I get arrested go to court pay big fine.. got my jail days down to time served already.. And I go back to living.. Then my back, neck, head and everything is messed up badly.. I have to go to ciropractor for 2 yrs (nothing helps) "he was a joke" insurance only pays up to 5 grand in bills so just those ciropractors was paid and taken from his insurance.. I lose my job and lose my living place.. I move to gf place in mean time... I get depressed and thinking daily bad sad things.. I dont even go anywhere... talk to my family.. Ive been a total change person from who I was! Anyways no doctors and hospitals will see me because no insurance.. and cause his insurance(wont say they are actually paying it)(because they dont know if its from the accident)... Anyways I am screwed cause for 2 yrs I cant see the hospital or doctors.. Anyways finally it go to the 2 year time limit of me making a case and doing my thing with the insurance.. I then went to lawyer he said he is a business man and a lawyer and he wasn't going to take my case cause he didn't want to lose.. I lied top cops.. I was drunk and knew he was drunk driving.. I also knew he thought suicidal thoughts once in a while.. so its just as much as my fault as it is his he said.. So I guess I am stuff, cant sue the friend or insurance, lawyer denied me.. no insurance.. no job.. what do I do? I asked lawyer and said so someone can drink and drive and get away with something? I get hurt and he gets away from it? I said what if he killed someone or something.. I dont want to pay 100 grand in bills for when I do go to hosipital and pay it mself.. then Id be paying crap load monthly.. and the big issue is I am young 23 yrs old.. and I was to get a house with gf in some years.. And I don't want a check taken monthy the rest of my life to hosipital.. so my questions are what can help me pay or get rid of my bills? Some people suggested do the bills and file bankrupt but I want this as my final thing.. I didn't know if there was businesses.. or companys.. or things that could help me get it paid for me being poor and etc.. I am not disabled... and not on no medicade or medicare.. also I was told hospitals are also suppose to give so many free surgerys each year to get some sort of help with taxes yearly.. and etc.. so I was wondering what ways can I get this paid for for when I do it? I know I can get a job and the insurance from it can pay some.. but around here isnt a job that is going to give you a good insurance medical thing.. Mostly fast food. And I know that new bill pass of the (everybody suppose to have insurance thing including poor people).. should I wait for that to come out and get on that and have that pay for it? I don't know Ive never been introuble this big.. or had anything to do with all the"law/bills" etc.. Suggestion Ideas.. I live in Illinois now

#1. are you actually able to work, NOW? if not, you should try filing for SSDI. depending on your particular situation, and whether or not it's a permanent injury that leaves you unable to work, you may end up being eligible for SSI. not sure about SSDI, but i know you're eligible for Medicare under SSI; i'm thinking Medicaid under SSDI.

#2. check your area for free medical services through some kind of clinic. here, in Denver, there's a free clinic called Stout Street Clinic for those who are in reduced circumstances, homeless, waiting on Medicaid/Medicare, etc. they do referrals for regular hospital/doctor services that they don't have (mammogrophy, xray, physical therapy, etc.).

they DO offer psychological counseling, some dental, have an eye clinic, doctors/PAs/nurses for well-care & emergent care, lab testing, and free prescription services

#3. check with your area's Legal Aid regarding your hospital bills and possible bankruptcy. Day shelters often have these services available on-site.

#4. check about food banks (i'm sure you at least have a Catholic Charities) that can help with food. quite a few different churches can help with food, clothing, furniture, etc.

#5. register with your local Department of Human Services for eligibility for food stamps & possible eligibility for AND (Aid to the Needy Disabled). technically, you ARE homeless and approval for these services will/can be fast-tracked.

those are the things i thought of off the top of my head. if you were in Denver, i could direct you to exactly who has what that will help you with everything you need. you'll have to do some searching for your area. a church is often a great resource for all this information.

even if you're not Catholic, Catholic Charities has incredible resources and information for where you can get the type of help i mentioned above. above all, do NOT feel embarrassed about getting the help you need. that's what they're there for.

    best wishes.

It's really hard to be accepted for Social Security Disability, people generally have to apply more then once. Especially now with the economy bad as it is it's more then likely even tighter.
Unfortunately putting yourself in a situation is an automatic rejection from insurance companies.
Bankruptcy due to medical is the most common and later most agencies will take that into account, although it destroys any chance of credit (including renting a place to live ) for 10 years.

There are free medical clinics sprouting all over, medical professionals are donating their expertise knowing the need for such, I'm having trouble finding it at the moment.
I believe it was on MSNBC that I heard of it, I'll look more and get back to you.

i will tell you, i was homeless in the past, stayed in a shelter with people i wouldn't normally associate with, used that clinic in the "ghetto," and took advantage of everything else i mentioned, and then some.

the biggest hurdle i had to overcome was my pride (i'm "better than/shouldn't need" that) & shame (shame because i lost my well paying job, my apartment, my car, everything i owned, etc.). once i got past that foolishness, and used every possible form of help i could find, i got back on my feet and now volunteer at some of those "ghetto" places, myself.

yes, there are/were crack heads, thieves, undesirables i have/had to deal with, however there are TONS of really decent people that end up in similar circumstances for a myriad of reasons through no fault of their own.

if you haven't actually used/applied for the services i mentioned, you don't know exactly what you're entitled to or can get. "there is no try; there is only do or do not."

the only "shame" lies in not making the attempt. overcoming my pride/shame actually took a couple failed (thank GOD) suicide attempts. absolutely do NOT listen to "some guy" who "says" he tried this, that and the other and couldn't get/'they' wouldn't give him any help. i've heard the same thing and it's usually from someone trying to scam the system. yes, it IS hard; yes, it DOES take time, sacrifice & effort; and yes you MAY be told no a few times. do it anyway if you really want to get out from under where you're at.

btw, i've never been to a chiropractor and never will. physical therapy is completely different and is directed under an actual medical doctor's care. a chiropractor is NOT a doctor.

You say you're in Ill. now. and have you gone to the hospitals there as well as Iowa? I'm just making sure I understand that when you said
you were referring to both Iowa and Ill hospitals. I'm in Fl. and I guess each state is different as far as hospital finances go. Here they NEVER turn you away if you don't have insurance but, you will be billed. In a case like yours (here) you would take that bill and proof that you are not working and unable to do so at that time to the Finance Administrators and they determine if you are eligible for a type of gov funded coverage deal that they have (in your case you would be) they then disregard your bill and file it as "paid" I know as my other half was rushed to the hospital and we had very little income at the time and did this; was approved and no more bills have come to our house since.
Have you tried the State Rehabilitation Agency for Illinois? Here are 2 links that can help in your state.

    I hope these can help.

I wouldn't count on the Health Care Reform Bill all that much, even if it passes I'm sure it's going to take some time to get started.

If you can at all relieve yourself homeopathicly through physical therapy that might give you some relief.
Both Dr Oz and Dr Andrew Weil are excellent in that area. Both have helpful websites.

I don't know what else to suggest. I would say your lucky to be alive and not totally crippled. Look at it that way. I know you gotta be depressed, try to change that, not by drinking, that will only depress you more.
Good luck, hope you find a way out.
Everyone in their youth has done some regretful, it's how you recover that will set the tone for the rest of your life.

I am not "disabled" to not work.. I plan on getting this taken care of then working again. And the insurance for jobs isn't nothing special either. Also I don't know if you thought I was being mean by saying ghetto.. I am a poor trash white guy lol . Anyways I am in Illinois and for real.. I know theres other places that do this and some should do it here to.. But my gf works for 1 main hospital here and I've called numerous times for 2 yrs and asked why I couldn't see a doctor for medical bills relating to the case.. They won't see me due to no income to pay bills, no insurance(why take the chance of me not paying them) they are hurting and the insurances ain't paying them what they owe.. so the hospitals take it out on the people.. I know people other then me having issues with this stuff. Also to bigtrucks maybe I misread or maybe what you said is stuff that has to do with the links provided(hasn't clicked links)"Finance Administrators and they determine if you are eligible for a type of gov funded coverage deal that they have" Is this the hospital people (in the offices) or is this another person in some other building that Id go to? I know you can sign up for being poor when you go to the hospital..(and they may take it into consideration) other then that I don't know..so more help assisting? Also I don't want to file for bankrupcty as my age.. and Iam not going to pay a large bill the rest of my life.. When its going to be hard enough paying the regular bills in life.. Jobs don't pay around here. And bills are nuts... they even have limit on your water bill(if you try to save and not use so much) you still gotta pay a limit amount even if you don't use much! Its just nuts..

edit made without reading darlene last post(she clicked post before me)

Alright I clicked on the links bigtrucks.. but that stuff has to do with disable.. I can't get disability because I am not really disable.. I can have test and surgery and probably be alright.. I know family that tried it and they really are.. and theres people I know that got bigger problems.. And they people at the disability place said "well it you can get that handicap job at walmart where they greet people" lol I was like wtf rude and crap.. but oh well they got denied 3 times and finally got a lawyer that worked out in the end.. years of suffer then they get on it! And then the "backpay" wheres that? lol anyways...lets stick to subject;(

regarding SSI, it took me exactly 3 months, from initial submission of the forms & documents to final evaluation, to be approved (this was NOT a LONG TIME AGO; it was pretty recent). i also have a sister on SSI and she also didn't have any problems being approved.

there are rare cases where people have problems. i personally know 1 person that was denied due to the "help" he was receiving with the application process. he has brain cancer & the "help" flat out didn't DO anything; didn't even turn in the required paperwork and didn't tell him. that's why he was turned down the first time. as soon as a competent person got involved, he was given emergency approval within weeks. the only attorney involved is the one suing the incompetent help for negligence.

the other cases (quite a few) i've personally observed were turned down because they failed to bring any documents (ID, birth certificate, Social Security card, medical records) to the interview, they didn't turn paperwork in on time, they were consistently late with paperwork, they blew off medical/psychological evaluations, etc. i currently live 2 floors below one of these people who denies he's guilty of doing this. problem is, his significant other is my BFF and she can't get him to fill out the paperwork or go to his interviews/appointments. he'd rather get high (marijuana).

i currently know 2 people who've been turned down 3 or 4 times. in both cases it's because they they truly aren't entitled and keep applying anyway. one woman keeps canceling her minor knee surgery that would cure her "disability." the other woman has mild diabetes that is completely manageable with proper diet and medication...she's also addicted to crack. both these women are younger and would rather not work.

it is an absolute fallacy that "It's really hard to be accepted for Social Security Disability, people generally have to apply more then once" it's just not true, regardless the media stories about what happened to a particular person. if this was true, there'd be TONS of these stories.

this is what i meant by NOT listening to anyone who has limited or incorrect information. i have personal, ongoing experience with this EXACT issue and know whereof i speak. this includes Social Security, subsidized housing, Human Services, clinics, legal options, shelter, food banks, etc.

in Denver, this is true of the mainly private hospitals. Denver Health Medical (formerly Denver General) is publicly funded and this is NOT the case. i have actually used their facility, both in an emergency situation and through the clinic i previously mentioned. it's not the best, but it's better than nothing.

you may not be "disabled" but it sounds like you're at least temporarily unable to work at full capacity. if so, this is where SSDI may help. SSI is for more permanent/long-term disability.

Cake you said " you may not be "disabled" but it sounds like you're at least temporarily unable to work at full capacity. if so, this is where SSDI may help. SSI is for more permanent/long-term disability" I am not able to work capacity because of lifting and etc is probably going to hurt my back. But my back already hurts.. And I am not disbale to where I can't work.. they say I can do typing.. where I sit down and help .. But I got pain laying, standing, sitting. My mom said I could try to get something medicade or medicare ( don't know what they really are for or which is which). But she said its for people that disable or something and you get pills paid for and bills paid for (or assist paying them with me).. but if I go back to work.. id be reporting that to them.. and they will knock me off since I am able to work.. But that sounds like that thing shes on but who knows.. I am taking suggestions and eventually talk with my mother(who have gone through it all almost) cept she stuck with the bills the rest of her life..

I also had no problem getting approved for SSI. A local doctor told me to go apply , I thought it was useless but went anyway. I must have been on deaths doorstep and not realized it. I had emphysema and an irregular heart beat.

Your right about chiropractors cake, I've heard lots of stories where they did more harm then good.

Another thought that just crossed my mind is bankruptcy costs a few hundred dollars to file and that's with legal assistance not an attorney.

When your broke it's not a time for pride. When Dan (my man) and I got together he was a pile driver in heavy construction making big bucks. He got hurt was out of work, his disability ran out so he took a job recycling behind a store until he was called back to work.
It brought in a few dollars at least.

you're thinking of Workmen's Comp. you file for SSDI through Social Security. i filed for both (was told to by Social Security) was approved for both, got SSDI the first month then it switched to SSI after that.

that's a disability, even if it's temporary AND it sounds like you're not able to work at your regular job. check into Vocational Rehability, also. they can help with retraining in a different career. maybe you can type, if you already know how. if you don't know how, it's rather pointless. start actively working on the solutions i mentioned and check into talking with someone who's familiar with your state's Human Services, Medicaid (for instance, someone at a Day shelter or contact Catholic Charities if they have services in your area) and Social Security so you can get factual answers for any questions you have. they'll be able to direct you properly on how to use all the services you might need.

  16. bigtrucks

..as well the State Rehab offices can set you up for "Re-Training" in a field that is more suitable for your conditions.Hence forth you you get the medical help until you go through training and rehab and you're back in the work force,PROVIDED they don't deem you "Disabled" I also am "Disable" by way off SSI and when I started out with this I had no intentions of getting it because I and my Doctor didn't feel I was(disabled). My former employers insurance company insisted I go through this and now here I sit getting SSI and Medicare at age 58. In my family that's bad as we all were able to work right up to retirement/68 yrs of age which ever came first.
But do apply because you'll never know if you don't. and just think of how much you would lose out of during the time that you don't try and could be accepted. This is, as your title implies, just advice. Take it or Leave it. All we are saying is to Think before making any decisions.

When I filed, my attorney and court fees were figured into the bankruptcy...didn't cost me a thing out of pocket right off. I ended up paying $25.00 every two weeks for about three years to get rid of about a $3,000.00 debt.

I do know it's much harder now to file than when I did it umpteen years ago, though.

Silas, you have a lot of information here, so by all means, do like the READ & RUN ME FIRST guide! Start with one, and if that doesn't work, don't quit, just keep going until you fine one that does;)
    Best of Luck to you;)

I feel like a read and run has been done. Instead of posting quotes.. I didn't know someone could get onto Disability even tho If I am only injured for short time longer.. Cause I would be using that disability to get on what ever program helps with bills.. then go to doctor get bills paid for (Hopefully).. then after healing I ll go apply for real job/get off disability. Another thing bankrupt is 2,000 think its cheap here cause so many people have to file for it due to stupid town we live in/near(joke). I know 2k is big amount but I sure in heck don't want to pay hospital bills in the amount of blah blah blah.. I can deal with some thousands.. but 15,000 we talking.. Also I don't know what to do like I said.. i can try and look at these suggestions and maybe someone will give me info when I do call them..
Thanks for all suggestions so far
