Hello so I was having trouble taking ownership of folders/files but I am able to take control of the folder/files now. The problem is I am taking control of the j drive/documents and settings/owner folder. When I take control of the owner folder and go inside to other folders/files I am still getting access denied. Then I have to go to the security tab for that file/folder and go through all the steps to take control and then if there is another folder inside of this folder I have to take control of it also and so on. Shouldn't taking control of the folder that everything is inside of give me permission for all the folders/files inside of it? I am pretty sure I have everything to full control/allow. This is going to take me decades by the time I take control of every folder/file:(

At the bottom of the take ownership window should be a box to take over subfolders--Are you ticking it active?

Ya I check it then click ok but the weird thing is at the Microsoft site says i am suppose to receive this message

You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?

    Then the window just closes.

Also I could not get into safe mode to access the security tab so I am using this http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_home_sectab.htm to access it normally logged in.

I think the dougknox security tab is the same program so that shouldn't be the problem.

I've only taken ownership once so I'm out of ideas.

It sounds like you have checked the obvious:
You have Simple File Sharing off.
On the Security tab for your Doc&Set../Owner folder if you hit the Advanced button you do have Full Permission for your folder.

When you are taking permission have you tried adding your username specifically rather than a group like Administrators? That is all I can think of unless maybe trying to take ownership of the J:\Documents & Settings folder and see if it gives you access to more subdirectories.

    Good Luck.
