Oh what a mess... my neighbor had a pop-up on her screen telling her to call a phone number. She didn't and talked to the guy for 45 minutes. He infiltrated the computer and I havery no idea what to do.

I ran all of the male are removal steps yesterday. When she turned it on toda a screen popped up with a man's voice telling her that if she tried to shut them down, they would shut down her computer.

I have tried to boot in safe mode but i am stuck on "Failure configuring Windows updates. Revering changes. Do not turn off your computer.

This is an Asus X54C running Windows 7. Thank you!

    HI there :)

For 32-bit (x86) systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.

    • Restart the computer.

When I click "Start Repair" it says if I have attached a device, please remove it and restart your computer. I tried the Command prompt and it says "The device is not ready." Can't get any further. Any ideas?

I can't get into safe mode. I can get to the repair screen which offers some options such as repair - which does nothing and command line which I don't really know how to use. When I try to boot in regular or safe mode with networking, the computer freezes up.

If you can get into command line then please follow the instructions that Kestrel13! gave you for FRST. The instructions there were for using the command prompt. To repeat, after getting to the command prompt:

    • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
    • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
    • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
    • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
      • Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
    • The tool will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this log to your next reply. (How to attach)

Or are you saying that when you try to locate your flash drive using "Computer" from notepad that you cannot find it?

When I follow the command line instructions, it says "The device is not ready." I ran the from the flash on another computer and it works fine.
