Task manager not opening up?

HI i was wondering if anyone could give me some input on a problem that i have been having. For a couple of weeks now i can not open up my task manager it opens and the close quickly and i got secruity task manager and it does the same. Also i noticed that now my nortons auto pertect is off and will not come back on. All the other progams work fine but just seem to lag and take more time to do simple things. I have windows xp and my computer is 2.4ghz and 512mb of ram.
I am just looking for any ideas because i do not have a clue why this would be happening. Thanx
