Task Manager Processes question

Okay so I was looking for help to determine what processes I can safly end and which I can't since there are TONS that are taking up HUGE amounts of memory. I came across this thread

One advice given was to "I suggest you start by first disabling unneeded services". I have gone into control panel -> admin. tools -> services and I am looking at the list. I am now even more confused then ever. I don't even know what half of these things are?

For example:
AC profile Manager services
ASP.NET State Services
Background Intelligent Transfer

etc

There must be over 100 of them. I am running Windows XP

Here is one link that will help you find out what your processes are.

Just type in the process you want to find out about and it will tell you what it is.

Dont know which Service Pack your running but BlackViper has some suggestions to what services can be set to disabled, this guide is for XP SP2 ( but in his side links their is one for SP3 also ) http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/Archive/servicecfg.htm also gives small description of what each one is.

You may find some that your applications have added, so may need to search a list as in the one WildWolf gave you to find what they are.

Word of warning though, I would start by using the "SAFE" listing for services to stop, as if you disable any service, it may have knock on effect of rendering an application of yours to fail, so make notes of what ones you disabled.

and DO NOT stop Background Intelligent Transfer from your example list, its a crucial service.
