Hi, I am new and have a very annoying problem.

When I try to open task manager a black box comes up like the cmd, but in a split second it's gone, it said something but it goes away too quick to read so i downloaded a screen video capture program and recorded it, it said "program too big to fit in memory".

I have tried just about every method of opening it, ctrl + shift + delete will not open it, same with right clicking the taskbar, along with every other way I have tried including searching from the start menu for the exe and running it.

I have googled and googled, with no success, the only information i found was a link to a thread on this site - http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=216785

He is the only other person i could find who has the same problem as i do, I have scanned for viruses countless times, nothing.

please help ! - I am running windows 7 Ultimate

    Thanks

Wrong combo of keys. It is ctrl + alt + del and in Vista and 7, ctrl + shift + esc will also open it.

What if you search your computer for taskmgr.exe, then double click on one of the results? I can make my TM open like that and I have 7 x64.

You may first have to show hidden and systems files.

    Are you using 32bit or 64bit WIN7?

I'm attaching a copy of mine (32bit) so you can test if yours has been corrupted.

I was hoping it would work. It seemed strange in the other thread that only one .exe was not working. I guess it got corrupted somehow. [The other thread definitely sounded like his forcing shutdown could have caused the corruption]

I guess you should copy that file into your System32 folder so it works system wide. [You can rename your old taskmgr.exe something like taskmanager_old.exe if you don't want to delete it.] :)

yeah, i tried that and now its saying i need permission from "trustedinstaller", did some research and its supposed to be difficult and risky, ohwell im not too fussed. at least i have task manager now

Thanks sepultura for posting about TrustedInstaller. I hadn't run into that before. I'll have to read up on it.

This first thread didn't make it seem too hard to get privileges on a file to delete or rename it. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/how-to-delete-a-system-file-in-windows-vista/ But it doesn't state whether or not trying to put a file with a known system-file name into system32 would be difficult.

I'm going to look at it with a less important file and read a few more links to see what the steps would need to be.

Note: I'm just thanking you for letting me know there is a problem replacing a System32 file not saying you should try to move taskmgr over to system32. I'll have to read some more and do some testing before ever recommending it.

    Thanks again, :)
