Hi, I am looking after my friends computer while she's away, but she will be home in 2dys. I have discontinued some of the sevices by mistake and now I have no taskbar and no matter what clicking I do I cannot get it back so I have no Startup Manu, Compt. is very slow booting. I do have Startup Menu on another account but when I go in to msconfig there, there is something about Rundell32 which was not there before. I tried System Restore on the other account also and I got: you do not have system restore protection, please restart, and the same recurs again. Please, please, someone tell me how to fix this as I have only 2days. Specs: WinXP2 Amd Turion 2600, RAM 256MB, Hard Disk 40GB, Firewall Win XP, IE Browser, Broadband, AVG Scanner. Boneyeye

Sounds like you have stopped explorer.exe from running.

At the desktop bring up Task Manager by pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE.

Click FILE from the top menu bar and then click NEW TASK (RUN).

Type in the box where it says "Open:" explorer.exe , then click OK.

    Reboot...should work ok.

Look above those and you will see tabs listed saying Applications, Processes, Performance, Networking and Users.

Look above those and you will see File, Options, View, ShutDown and Help on a menu bar. These are the ones I am referring to.

Hi, did what you told me and was able to get task manager working but putting "explorer.exe" did not make any difference to the problem. I have more knowledge now on what i did, as I often write these things down.I deleted a file:NVIDIA driver helper from:c:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe. I thought it was a varient of SDBOT-AFX Worm. I also deleterd C-Dilla copy protection from C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\CDAC11BA.EXE and, Creative CD-ROM from C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTSvcCDA>EXE as a full test scan in PCPitstop said they were not needed.(see Next Post) Boneyeye

Make sure this is not the problem, http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=592

    AND

I know you mentioned it before but make sure the computer has SP2 installed.

The taskbar is not "hidden", correct?

Hi again, No matter what clicking I do at the bottom of the desktop when curser changes to arrow even though i drag it the taskbar will not appear. Now the curser does not change either side or top of window. Also there is a glimmer of what might have been a taskbar-slight blue line, there at the bottom. I have also checked System Properties and Service Pack 2 is listed. TY again. Regards Boneyeye

Go back to the account you mentioned before and make sure about the "Rundell32".

If it's Rundll32.dll, that's generally normal. Rundell32 on the otherhand is most likely a virus.

hi, Matacumbie, sorry I did not sign the last post. I think my brain is starting to get confused. I checked the Registry and the path for rundll32: Name: NView, Data:rundll32.exe nView.dllLoadHook. is that a virus . By the way I have been unable to reinstall AVG, I got a warning thatRPC server is unavailable. Hope this will help someone to solve my problem as my friend is coming home tomorrow and I would like to have this solved. TY Boneyeye

There might be other ideas out there, but I would start going thru the steps in Malware.

I don't know why Services is missing. Spyware is the only thing I can think of that might do it. Never encountered that one.

While I was waiting for other ideas, I would focus on malware. :)

Hi, Doyou wish me to moe to Malware Removal Forum. If so could you put a copy of posts: 9,10,11,15,18. for me or whatever you think is important.TY Metacumbie and everyone else tha has tried to solve this prob. for me. Boneyeye

I would. Do all the required scans and post them there. I think at least some of this malware related, maybe all of it. Get the system clean and if there are any remaining software issues might be easier to fix.

Just refer them to this thread, http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=135981

    Hope it helps.

If you stopped Remote Procedure Call (RPC) you really caused yourself big problems. Stopping this can cause all kinds of issues (including making services disappear). You need to run service.msc from Task Manager and then Start the service and set the Startup Type to automatic. Do the same for other services you stopped.

You could also try the below to see if it helps! If it works properly, it will restart Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and Protected Storage.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Just to keep you moving along since I don't always have time to peek into the Software Forum and if my previous registry patch did not help, continue on with the below:

    • Let's try running msconfig. Click Start, Run, and enter msconfig and hit OK.
    • Now choose the Services tab. See if you can find Remote Procedure Call (RPC) in there and put a check on it. Then click Apply.
    • If the above does not work, check this out: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;241584
    • If you have a problem with the above link or get error messages, see the below link:

Thank's for coming over and helping Chas. :)

Malware was the only other thing I could think of that might cause all of that.

    Thank's again. ;)

Tried all that was advised, and Microsoft KB838428 brought back Services. From there I was able to check with Black Viper's List and turn on RPC. There is still some small glitches which I think are Malware so I will run through a thorough Cleaning and Maintainance and if I have anything unsolvable I will post in the Malware Forum. I would like to thank each and every one here at Major Geeks for all your help and patience as this took up a lot of all your time. Bye for now.
