I seem to have a conflict with the addresses on my network and I'm getting the above errors. I have a cable Motorolla modem at 192.168.100.1 which is unconfigurable. From that I have my D link wireless router attached via the ethernet, the D link is at 192.168.0.1 and from that we connect a few laptops via the wifi. The Dlink gives my laptop an IP of 192.168.0.100 and it's at this IP address that I have the conflict.

From what I have read I understand that I might need to change the DHCP range on the Dlink? I'm not sure what range I should enter, etc. If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it!

I have a feeling if I walk you through changing the D-link's range you will come back and tell me one of the computers isn't working. I'm not sure now which is smarter -- to change the range or walk you through setting your computer to a static IP. Well, come back if my prediction is correct and a device won't connect after. On the Dlink it sounds as if you know where the setting is for the DHCP range and the IP of the router is -- they are usually on the same page. You may change the third number set between the .'s to anything from 0-254. I would pick something very unlikely, say 167, so that the router is 192.168.167.1 and the DHCP range is 192.168.167.210-240 (as an example).

There are devices that come with a default IP out of the box that can cause headaches if they conflict on your network. Because I've been a victim of this, I learned the hard way not to use the standard 192.168.0.X or 192.168.1.X and a few other numbers that are too common as my ip range.

i hope that helped. If you need more detail i will need the model of the router. And welcome back to Majorgeeks!

You may change another IP with some modifier. Generally speaking, it works well.

Yup thanks Handygal, I've been away along time :) I have changed the settings and everything seems to be working fine. I really don't understand what the conflict was as there are only ever two devices connected to the network, both via wifi and both are laptops.
    Thanks again

Not sure I understand what you mean?

If it happens again you can PM and link back to this thread. I can think of two things that might have happened, one has the possibility of recurring.

    Glad the easy one worked!

edit: can't PM on this board until you have more posts, but I'm usually on the networking board at least every few days.

One of the symptoms that I have and had this morning was going online and the internet not working, so I go into the Dlink router page and click on DHCP renew to get the internet working again :(

How long have you had this setup and this equipment and it was working fine? Can I have to model of the Dlink please?

Do you only have these two computers and nothing else attaching wirelessly? We could try connecting the computers with static IP's and leaving a small range of DHCP for other devices or visitors. For that I would need the IP of the router and the DHCP range please.

The set up has been here for about 6 months and I've always had the issue where I've had to click DHCP renew in the router page to get the internet working again, doesn't happen everyday just somedays.

The router is the DIR 300, and yes only two laptops connecting via wifi.

I've just been looking at the set up page of the Motorolla cable modem that feeds the internet to the D Link and there is a tick box that I can enable or disable labelled DHCP server enabled. It is currently selected so it looks like both modems are using DHCP, maybe this is my problem?

    AND,

Ok, the IP of the motorolla is 192.168.100.1, the DHCP range it allows is 192.168.100.11-42
The current IP of the Dlink is 192.168.167.1 with DHCP range 192.168.167.210-240

Can you go through the settings on the motorola to make sure it is not doing any other networking or LAN functions? The cable modem also has multiple network ports? Or is also wireless? Definitely turn off the DHCP function. You only want one device doing things like DHCP or NAT. If that doesn't help, we'll turn off the DHCP on the wireless too and enter static IP's instead.

The motorolla doesn't have any networking ports just one ethernet port for a single wired connection to which the dlink is attached. If disable the DHCP function on the motorolla the dlink doesn't work. If all else fails I will have to set up the laptops on static IP's I suppose. I was thinking however, to et the IP of the dlink and the DHCP within the range allowed by the motorolla?
