    Istarted up my PC this morning and symantic told me "TCP/IP is not installed". they also gave me a link I could click on for help.. which would have been great, if I had internet.. but I re-typed it over here.. and their answers were "contact customer support or your network admin" -__-;

Anyways, I'm running windows XP pro. I checked all the cables in the back of the PC but it still won't connect online, or to the network. I looked through the registry using ""hijack this" to see if there were any problems there and it said there was a "broken internet connetion because of LSP chain gap (#10 in chain of 12 missing)".

I realy have no idea how to fix this, and any help anyone can offer would be loved ^_^

I went to start > control panel > network connections
the only icon I have there is "Local Area Network" when I click on that there is a "internet protocal tcp/ip" listed. I clicked on "instal" and it prompted me to add another thing to the list, I tried adding a tcp/ip from the list of things I could add, but it wouldn't take the change.

if it helps any, the computer with the problem is the only one on the network that isn't working.. (the network admin isn't advailable to fix it ^^; )

With windows xp tcp/ip can't be uninstalled as its part of the os. try the following commands if sp2 is installed.
    netsh int ip reset tcplog.txt
    netsh winsock reset

    First paragraph
In Microsoft Windows XP, the TCP/IP stack is considered to be a core component of the operating system, and you cannot remove TCP/IP. Therefore, when you view the list of components for a network interface, you may notice that the Uninstall button is disabled when Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is selected. In extreme cases, the best solution for this issue may be to reinstall the Internet Protocol stack. But with the NetShell utility, you can reset the TCP/IP stack to restore it to its state that existed when the operating system was installed. This article describes how to use the NetShell utility for this purpose.

So microsofts own site stating tcp/ip can't be uninstalled is wrong? Ok lets just go with that. You may uncheck the option to use it, thus telling your connection to use a different protocol to connect but this never uninstalls the tcp/ip protocol. Im sorry if you don't believe me i just am going to bow down to a better expert.

Why don't you post the process you used to do this so we know what you did. I'd just about bet a nice dinner that you simply turned off the protocol and didn't uninstall anything. If you can uninstall it, every resource I've seen in the past 4 years has been totally wrong.

Done, its not letting me uninstall tcp/ip still, everything but that was uninstalled but that sorry. I guess i must be doing something wrong.

Yes please, you are able to uncheck it, and unistall everything but the tcp/ip protocol, i still can't believe your telling me microsofts own knowledgebase is wrong.

Not trying to be a pain, but help prevent any bad info:

As an internet tech, I've tried it on a daily basis for several years...as of right now, I've only heard of one report of it actually working....your it.

Microsoft doesn't know what they're doing either...you already established that.

Colemanguy seems to know what I'm talking about as well...bet you're in the the 'net' business too eh? Lemme guess....internet helpdesk? Just file it in the huge "I know more than the tech" file cabinet over in the corner.

You said you had a screenshot of it uninstalled?

But thats what the netsh commands are for, they actually repair/rebuild the tcp/ip connection, Unchecking doesn't do anything,

OK then RaineDragon, try unchecking the protocol option in lan properties, and also try the above mentioned netsh commands as thats what they are designed to do.

actually, I couldn't really get it to uninstall either, to be honest, and I am running pro.. I ended up uninstalling the network card and then re-installing it.. that was the only way I could get the TCP/IP to re-install..

unfortunatly, it still doesn't work, I have the same error..

and, unortunatly, I don't have service pack 2. I thought I had installed it, but I must not have. (I have had a few problems with this same PC in the past few months, first a bad virus and then a bad hard-drive so I have re-installed windows a few times, and I guess I missed it the last time)

Would it be possible to download service pack 2 on a windows 98 machine, and then take it over to that machine on a thumbdrive? or will sp2 just try to install it's self as soon as I download it (or not download to this machine at all)?
