Not Even Networked - Single Computer

Vista just ran the Hardware Diagnostic Tool and returned error that some of my hardware is not functioning properly.

TCP/IP Network Communication Test - NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller.
    - Cable Test - Passed
    - TCP/IP Network Communication Test - Cannot Run

I have networking disabled, this is a single computer. Shouldn't Vista recognize that? Or is there a setting for NVIDIA somewhere.

I have the 10/100/Mbps networking card installed but not using it to network.

I've received errors on performance from this before also. Is there a way this should be set if I'm not on a network?

Or is this normal on a single use computer?

    Vista Home Premium 32 bit
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2 GHz
    4.00 GB RAM

    Hi susa320,

Is this your computer? - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...:1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3740345
If so, then you have a network connector that is part of the motherboard and is controlled by the NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller. If you added another network card, you have available a second adapter to connect an ethernet cable to.
You don't want to disable networking because that would disable your connection to the net. (In reality, you are "networked" to the www when you surf websites.) As to being networked with a specific group of computers, you have to explicitly join or allow the resources of your computer to be shared before you are "networked".
From your description, one of the adapters is disabled and that is causing the error report. Was there a specific reason to add the additional card? Did you receive performance errors before you added the card?

:) Thanks for the prompt reply, let's see if we can resolve this or if it's normal.

That is my computer, but it's a reman and is a bit different. Of course the product # is the same except for the R after it. (KT526AAR-ABA SR5505F)

Checking it against BelArc; I have a different
    Mother Board: (OEM_MB IVY8 2.00) and
LAN: (NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Networking Controller)

I've added the additional RAM, at the 4.00 GB max.

It's the NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Networking Controller returning the error.

Thing is I'm not networked right now and don't need to be, but when I get a new laptop I can turn it back on, so it is normal for it to show that error when I have sharing disabled...all peer to peer...etc...is disabled.

I connect to the web just fine and even faster than the 1.5 mb speed...so no problem there. I show connected at 100Mbps.

Just curious why it would send that error. :confused
And if there is a setting or tweak to correct it. I have also had a start up error on it, that is slowing me down.

I'm wondering if maybe I still have something turned on that makes it think I'm still networked...maybe just one folder set to share? Is there a quick way to check that?

I do have a couple of other issues...printer status window won't shut down on it's own and an indexing question, but I'll post those in the appropriate forums.

    Thanks In Advance :)

I would think that the error is pointed at the hardware aspect because of the 2 adapters you have, on-board and card, rather than any sharing of files. So in that respect, the error message would be normal.
Someone else may want to chime in on this issue who knows more about the Nvidia network controller.

:) Thanks. That's what I was thinking. I'd have to turn off the Nvidia card or the on board one, right? I know how to disable the Nvidia, but how would you disable the on board one?

I still pretty new to VIsta.

    Thanks Again ~ Susa :)

You should be able to disable any of your network adapters in Device Manager.
Start > Control Panel > Device Manager (May have to answer UAC continue) > Expand Network Adapter + > right click adapter and choose Disable

I tried that first but the only one showing there is the Nvidia 10/100...that's why I was so confused on it.

UAC - that thing was disabled within 10 minutes of my Vista Experience.
