tcp/ip printing from win98

I know there is a way to do this but i've been unable to find it. I have a win98 machine on a home network with a laser printer that has its own NIC and IP address. It is not attached to a print server. what do I need to put on the win98 machine to get it to recognize the IP address of the printer and be able to print to it?

 

It's pretty much the same as on a windows XP machine. Open the printers menu, I think you can open it from control panel if you don't know where it is.

Once in there simply select the add new printer and then follow the wizard. You'll be adding a network printer and it will ask you for the IP address (it may say URL instead of IP, just enter the IP in that box) and possibly the port just go through all the questions and as long as it's networked and powered on it should work.

 

that would normally work IF the 98 machine was on a client/server network. This is on a workgroup. My fault that I didn't mention that before.

 

No, it makes no diffrence. It is on a network anyways. The printer either plugs into a NIC on your computer or the printer plugs into a hub/switch/router and then into a NIC on your computer. If this isn't the case then you don't have it plugged in correctly or it does not actually have an IP address. So even if all you have is a computer and a network printer then you still have a network of two.

Anyways, the setup is exactly as I described it above, there is no diffrence unless of course you arn't actually working with a network printer (one with an IP, ANY printer with an IP is a network printer). Just try what I said above, I've done this many times. It works just fine and it's how you install it.
