TCP/IP problem WinXP

Hi there,

I can't connect to the internet and have tried every method I know of to get the computer to connect to the internet with no success.

I have reinstalled TCP/IP several times.
I have run NETSH
I have tried ipconfig

I have reinstalled SP3

NADA.

If I try to ping from command prompt, I get "unable to connect ip driver" "error code 2"

Any ideas?

Other things that are symptoms, if it helps.

When I double click on the MSIE Icon on the desktop, it creates a new internet shortcut on the desktop
When I reinstall TCP/IP after uninstalling it, the computer will freeze when shutting down and need to be reset with the reset button on the computer.
Every once in a while I will get a "winlogon" error when starting up.

Hi

Try the following.

1. Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and see if you get a net connection (Safe Mode = F8 at boot)

2. If you have a software firewall, disable it and try connection.

3. Try fixing Winsock http://majorgeeks.com/download4372.html

4. In Device Manager click View > Show Hidden Devices and in Networking if there are any greyed listings right click uninstall them as you "may" have a duplicate network device thats blocking you.

5. Possible that you have some corrupted files so running chkdsk and sfc /scannow from a command prompt (may need Windows XP CD).

As for the other symptoms, have you have malware reciently?

Nope, no dice.
I suspect there was a virus that made key alterations to necessary operational files. I even tried removing all copies of TCPIP.SYS and manually replacing with known working version. Still no dice.
