I have a Sony laptop (PCG-FVR37) Pent 4. It was connected to a Belkin router during a lightning storm. The storm blew out the router, also the three comps that were connected to that router. The router is dead, will not power back up. The laptop does not show a connection to the cable modem when I plug it directly to the modem. I click repair on the network card and I get this message. "failed to query the TCP/IP settings contact you network admin". We do not have an admin. I have tried the ipconfig/all command, the netsh, and others. I have completed a system repair with the XP disk. The only thing I havn't done yet is a complete re-install. Is there a fix for this problem with out have to do a complete re-install?

Sounds like your network card got fried. So, maybe buying a surge protector, or grounding your cables might help.

I recently ran into something similar at work. A unprotected phone line that got hit, while the user was using his modem on his laptop. The modem was integrated. After the surge, and BSOD, everytime the user attempts to dial the modem, instant BSOD.

I slapped in a PCMCIA (PC CARD) modem, disabled onboard modem via device manager in all hardware profiles (I couldn't disable via bios), then everything works fine.
