Tecra8200 DVDRW problem....

    Toshiba Tecra 8200, TEAC DW-224E DVDRW, WinXP Pro. The problem is: the DVDRW is not recognized by WinXP unless the PC is booted with the DVDRW removed and I put it in after Windows loads. Then (most of the time) I have to go thru Add New Hardware to install it completely so it'll read/write. I have to do this EVERY time the laptop boots up.... WHY??? Is the drive itself faulty? It's not my laptop so I don't know if this is a new problem or has existed from day one.... any help or suggestions appreciated! THANX!
