Temporary fonts dialog when visiting MajorGeeks

For some time I now always receive an IE dialog requesting download of some "Temporary fonts" when I visit MajorGeeks. Pressing Yes/No doesn't seem to matter and the page wll look OK anyway.

I've inspected the source page and I can see that there's a font called "Stencil" that I don't have on my system (Swedish Win95 OSR2 with IE 5.5).

Anybody else experiencing this problem or have any idea how to avoid the dialog?

I've tried to find the Stencil TTF font, it's not on my W95 or my XP Home system and I haven't found anyone that works on the Net either. It appears that something on the site has changed recently, because I didn't have this problem before (e.g. two months ago).

Would it be possible to ask for a change of the HTML to add a substitute font (e.g. Arial) if Stencil isn't available?

I've been getting that as well, in WinXP/IE6. Happens only on the main page & anywhere in the download section. Doesn't happen in the forums. The message is that font needs to be installed temporarily, yes/no, and must be downloaded for every page change. I keep "Install On Demand" disabled in IE, which I assume is why I get a prompt to download the font instead of loading it automatically.

sounds like a missing font in IE alright.
seems to be an IE only thing realated to the intellitxt script. At least from what a quick lk at the source and google tell me. I'll have to view the page in IE to see what you guys are talking about.

might be wrong, it's prbably the font at the top of te page for the nav bar. It looks like a stencil. I don't see that in Opera. If one of the admins coud give the exact name then you could probablydownload it. I did search for stencil font download and turned up about 30 different fonts.

That seems to be the font, and the page text. I downloaded a TT version from Themeworld & installed it, and can use both Stencil and StencilBT in Outlook, so they're there, but the main pages are still wanting to download a font to display.

If I say "yes" to the temp install, the links at the top of the page look like the BT font, and if I say no, it dispays in plain old Stencil, which is a little bolder. Does the BT font need to be installed somewhere other than Windows/Fonts for IE to use it, or should that have done it?

I've also tried the tip to toggle the "Install On Demand" in IE, but I still get the "Temp Font" dialog either way. I hope it's possible to get the change in the HTLM page for alternative font family.

That’s right. MG was designed with the stencil font, which was standard on Win98. The WinXP came out without the font the site looked OK but not like we intended. We used to keep it linked on the about page to download. You can get it here (http://majorgeeks.com/stencil.zip ) - Just unzip it into your fonts folder. Recently we’ve been trying embedded fonts to solve the problem.

What’s supposed to happen is if you come in and don’t have it, you download it once and that should be that – But it’s not exactly working that way. Close, but not quite.

The download message has to be in you’re IE setting someplace. I haven’t seen that on any machine I’ve tested. Perhaps setting majorgeeks.com as a trusted site will help.

Thanks for the font. I've tried to install it into the fonts folder but it doesn't help, I still get the dialog (the font seems to work as expected though).

After adding the site to the trusted zone, it disappeared though. However, I feel slightly uncomfortable having a public site in the trusted zone.

Isn't it still possible to offer an alternative font family in the HTML? I believe that would cure the problem permanently. The problem seems specific to this site (and font), I've never seen that dialog before and I regularly visit many sites.

Well, it's not a problem for most users, I guess. I'm running Firebird .7, Netscape 7.1, and IE6SPx, I don't have Stencil in my Fonts folder, and I've never had any trouble loading the MG site except for the occasional slowness of the
    a.tribalfusion.com
loader. That one can slow down the loading of any page here by 5-10-15 seconds or even more sometimes.

I'd have jumped in on yours, but I missed that one. Sorry. Although I don't have the answers either.

@CP: Setting MG as a trusted site stopped the message here too, although I've always had the Stencil font, and still got it after manually installing StencilBT as well.

But like aguirRe, it feels weird adding a public site to the Trusted list. That's normally not necessary.
