    Hi there all,
    Happy Easter to you.

I've got a keyboard that has problems - a few of the keys don't work, which is awkward but most can be got around...except one - the minus/underscore doesn't work. How can is there an alternative way of making this (the underscore) appear, or of reprogramming a key (such as } ) to be underscore ?

I assume this is a laptop otherwise you'd simply get rid of the offending keyboard and replace it with a working one.

Easiest solution, attach an external keyboard and use it.

Next: keep the onscreen keyboard minimized and use it when you need a _ or - sign.

Workaround, which is cumbersome on a laptop:
    1. Turn numlock on
    2. You need to hold down the alt key as you type the following:
for underscore alt + 95 gives you _
for minus alt + 45 gives you -

I tend to use codes when I need to type Foreign language characters, degrees and cents/pounds.

You should still try another keyboard (even if a notebook) to make sure it is the actual keyboard and not something else.
I use ASCII codes all the time. The more common ones for me include:

    alt + 248 = °
    alt + 0177 = ±
    alt + 230 = µ
    alt + 0163 = £
    alt + 0162 = ¢

thanks, plodr. as a matter of fact I am already using num lock numeric keypad to get - ( top rightmost key. it's an MS700 wireless, have you ever tried to buy just the keyboard (from a seller who is not an extortionist ?)). The 5 6 and + keys don't work either :) Didn't your keyboard have SHIFT 3 which gives me £ ? I'm thinking I need degrees too, atm I'm using just C. But I am using it in conjunction with my (broken) laptop, tho' k/b & mouse pad are fine on that.

Using those code's along with Autohotkey should ease things a lot.

Thanks Digerati, your message was in before I had completed mine (typing speed < 1 character per second)

There are plenty of good quality cheap keyboards (usb or wireless) to buy from many many suppliers. I have a particularly good wireless KB and mouse that I bought from the fantastic German discount store Lidl. It was dirt cheap and works like a dream.

Thank you for that tip Max. Was it a giant Lidl ?

Here in the UK all the Lidl (and Aldi - also great) are medium size stores.

I didn't realize that, I have been in some small ones and some medium sized, and I believed that the absence of supersized ones was of because of where I lived.

    Silly Americans ! :)

odd thing, alt + 9 [from above OP) 5 [from numeric keypad] gives me ♣
alt + 9 [from numeric keypad] 5 [from numeric keypad] gives me _

there seem to other differences from using numeric keypad & number keys above QWERTY pad

I should have mentioned that the keys I gave assume you are using the numeric keypad or in a laptop, num lock must be on first so you use the numbers on the letter keys.
You never use the numerical keys across the type.

The club, ♣, you are showing is the code for alt + 5 (the 9 key pressed across the top is ignored).

I would not have thought that. Fortunately this has not has happened to my laptop's keyboard, for it has no numeric keypad
