i am new to this form. i was told by an experienced engineer that finding information here works.
i have a new 2003 windows terminal server that has a separate domain controller (different server). i have 50 users on the TS that are local and 2 remote (WAN). the two remote are experiencing when disconnected to the server problems. there is a cobol program that they are using and when reconnected they get up to 80 logins of the same program. We are running out of licenses and all that.

i have looked and the TS client does not have any auto logins. i don't know where this might be coming from. Even if the remote user is not actively running the cobol program when disconnected when reconnecting there will be a large number of these programs running. If someone could help i would appreciate it. bruce

    Careful !!
Major Attitude already has trouble getting out through the bathroom door.

    With regard to your query.

You say the problem occurs on reconnection.

Does it occur on first connection?
Does it occur without the Cobol program executing? I.E. for other use of the remotes?

What do the event logs say on the server and the remotes?

    Windows+R>typein
    eventvwr.msc

The event viewer for the client does not have any errors.

the event viewer for the terminal server does have the following:
warning event 1517 source userenv user is ntauthority system
windows saved user <domain name> /user name registry while an application or service was still using the registry during logoff. the memory used by the users registry has not been freed. the registry will be unloaded when it is no long in use. this is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the local service or network service accounts.

Yes, the multiple cobol programs start the first time we log back in.

Yes, the multiple programs come up even if the user was not running that application when they were logged out.

    thank you for your time.

Thank you very much for the assistance. Before i entered this thread i googled and went to MS for help.

i am further looking into this and the two users that are effected are randomly getting other programs that are on the TS default user desktop. they may get windows explorer when reconnecting 50 times, or 200 documents opened that are in their my documents folder.

    very strange.

My guess would be to look at logon dead time or timeout settings in the registry.
I don't have a 2003 server in front of me to check look at for these.
I think the problem is in the server not the clients as both are affected. Can you try another client pc known to be correctly set up, from somewhere else to prove this?
