    Hi guys,

On the same subject, I tried DSLreports and it gives me

    1270 kbps down
    143 kbps up

    My ISP states max speed

    3.1 Mbps down
    180 kbps up

My ISP server is about 40 miles away. Videotron.

1 How do I know what's bits or bytes, as programs report speed differently. What's the standard nomenclature?

2 1/3 the speed on down seems to me to be somewhat of a rip off. Am I right, or is it the same as dial up, as far as distance is concerned, the further the less speed, and I should live with it.?

3 What a difference in speed:D and in money:(

Ah well, that's life. Any input would be most welcome

    TIA

    augie

BTW, Only have broadband for 1 month. I'm a noob on this.:)

Okay here is my some what expierenced opinion on what I know about bite and bytes, if it if KB it is Kilo Bytes, if it is Kb then it is Kilo bites which is kinda funny when 8 bits = a byte so if you do the math you should kinda get a clue what your "true" speed is. BUt I am sure there are others that can clarify this and give you a better understanding.

As for distance as far as I know then yeah the farther the weeker a signal, I am in Philadelphia proper and have cable so my connection does no really ahve far to travel but there are a lot of users in the area so I due experience traffic jams like when kids are usually getting home from school and people betweeen 3-6pm, that is a bad time to get on atround here...........

    Hope this helps a little.

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

KB should be kilobytes, Kb in reference to modem specs should be kilobaud, which is about the same as kilobits. 8 bits to the byte, and 1024 bytes to a kilobyte.

Biggest factors with cable are the number of users on your node tying up avalable bandwidth, and capping of bandwidth by the provider. Speedguide and DSLReports are good sites. Nose around there a bit.
