testing hardware: can the printer port fail

Hi Majorgeekers,

I'm having a problem installing my old HP laserjet 1100 on my desktop which has XP running it. It installs and works fine on my laptop which is also using XP. I've tried to downloading the drivers from HP but with no success. I've followed the trouble shooting and removed and added the drivers, etc.

I was wondering if it might be a hardware problem in that the bit where the printer plugs in is not working. The desktop is just about to loose its warrentee so i need to get this sorted. Is there a program that can tell if the printer port is working?

sorry if i'm not using correct language, but i simply don't know it.

Hi, just an update on my problem. I just added a Cheap USB Hub which has a printer port on it and the printer works that way which leads me further to believe that it is a hardware problem. but still, if anyone knows if there is a program that can test, then that would be cool.

in my inexperience, i did not realise that the port needed enabling. I would have thought the company who built the computer would do that for me. TUTUTUT.

right, sorry to have wasted any bodies time. I'm been into the bios and sorted it out with the help from a friend. If anyone knows how to delete these messages, would you or let me know so i don't waste anyone esles time.
